Having arrived in London, the Doctor and Beverly set about trying to find Robert Dudley. The Doctor tells Beverly about the last time he met Dudley, in his first incarnation, when he attended the festivities surrounding Queen Elizabeth 1’s coronation.

First impressions last, even for Time Lords, it seems.
Well, well, a guest spot from One, eh? How perfectly marvelous!
Mmmmm at least QE1 hasn’t met Doctor number ten yet. . . . the Doctor ten became the Queen’s enemy for some apparent reason (remember The Shakesphere code).
Wonderful appearance of one!
Is it just me or does Queen Liz look like Cate Blanchett?
I love how you included the First Doctor. Normally, we would only get the same doctor for the flash back. This gives you more liberties, which is very nice.
In the last TV episode, 10 recalled that he married QE1…
Oh, Doctor, allowing pique to color your judgment? For shame!
Of course, there may be more to it than that. But I think Beverly’s going to be particularly leery of his opinions for a bit after that story.
Heh! I love how the Doctor says someone else has a “pompous air of self-importance” (whistles)
Rudi: Ugh. Yes, I had to double check that, but you’re right. However, I think that’s a definate case of REALLY CRAPPY SLAPDASH WRITING! Sounds like someone said “oops. Got to tie up a loose end before David Tennant disappears.” So I choose to think he’s being flippant and lying about what REALLY happened. That level of historic disruption is SO out of character.
Rich, I think that’s the point isn’t it? The Doctor’s acting out of character because he’s going mad. Knowing he’s approaching his death he’s trying to make the most of it and he’s not doing it very well. He’s trying too hard to be the old jokey Ten we know and love whilst trying to run from the inevitable.
… That or he’s joking. We’ll never know.
Anyway, great comic page. I’m so glad this is a Third Doctor story.
Great story, Love seeing one doctor remembering the life of another incarnation. Since One almost met Queen Bess at her coronation it doesn’t screw up the continuity of The Shakespeare code.
Ten’s line about marrying her, along with the remark about her nickname no longer applying
I think is just have a throw away line, put in simply to cause debate.
I hate RTD for doing stuff like that.. “Oops, we forgot to explain why QE1 was so mad at Ten.. let’s make him do something really stupid and completely out of character! Don’t like what I do, go watch Supernatural!” Freaking RTD.. *grumbles about CoE*
Love 3’s flashback to his 1st incarnation. Dudley made a big enemy that day. I hope he was on the end of 1’s scathing tounge. As for the Tenth Doctor/ Elizabeth 1 thing, I think it s just a throwaway, lighthearted continuity thing. And RTD has made the greatest cotribution to DW since Verity Lambert. I shudder to think about what might ave happened if he had not been the one to bring it back.
Yay, One! That IS the advantage of cartooning: you can put in whoever you like.
Rich, you know, I don’t say this strictly to flatter you, but seriously, I actually think your rendition of John Pertwee is actually getting better (which is hard for me to believe, because I thought it was pretty excellent in TTD). In panel three, he’s virtually unmistakable. You’ve been doing an incredible job on these new stories. Thank you.
And I have to admit, I’d forgotten the Shakespeare Code, and completely missed the ‘married QE I’ reference in the last ep. I’ll have to review that some time. It doesn’t bother me as much as it might some, simply because the Doctor’s off the cuff remarks like that invariably have a much more complicated story that finally seems plausible when dramatized. It’s like non-canon winking, which is great in a story featuring a time traveller. I don’t mind these little divergences so much; I merely wish I could see the story played out for myself.
Sadly, with Tennant leaving and the new series never yet daring to take the old two/three/five/ten Doctors approach, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see it for ourselves. In the end, it’s just Russell having a bit of fun. I don’t begrudge him that. I’m not as much of a purist as some, and usually laugh when he takes a poke at the fandom. I think it’s good for us to be shaken up now and then. Otherwise, this series really would become a fanwank relic, when it clearly has the ability to be a standard bearer and trendsetter.
I honestly thought science fiction television was dead after Farscape ended, until Doctor Who came back, and it’s been absolutely brilliant. It is now just about the only television series I’d like to write for (I wouldn’t mind writing something for Torchwood or Sarah Jane, either). I’m seriously thinking about submitting a spec script to Moffatt’s crew (and yes, I’m aware of the extreme unlikelihood that anything I write will get read by anyone on Moffatt’s crew, but you know, you have to try).
The Tenth Doctor married Queen Elizabeth I then left her. (See The End Of Time Pt. I – 25th December 2009)
Whoops! Sorry – that’s still a month away! Let’s get back in my TARDIS and get out of here…
Wait… so he named his car after QE1?
Also, I wonder which companions were with One at the time, since Four, Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten are the only ones canonically to have periods of having no companions for certain lengths of time.
He admired her so much he named his car after her! Nice touch.
I thought the whole ‘marrying Queen Elizabeth’ was pretty obviously supposed to be a sign that the Doctor had lost a marble or two. I mean, he wouldn’t be acting like that normally, but it makes perfect sense if you consider his mindset at the end of Waters of Mars that he would go and do something like that just because he could. He is acting totally out of character, but that was the point the whole time.
Plus, it was an epic brick joke.
You know, I’m curious…
Why is everyone reading his nervous exposition to Ood Sigma as a suggestion that he married Queen Elizabeth the first?
“Got married, that was a mistake. Good Queen Bess, and let me tell you, her nickname is no longer…”
I know that they’re mentioned in close proximity to each other, but I interpretted them as separate events. He got married to someone, it was a mistake, and then later on he did something to Queen Elizabeth that mucked up her nickname.
Doctor, you were probably spared by Dudley spoiling your chance to talk to the queen, knowing how things will go on Mars, you probably shouldn’t be meeting the people you admire.
Good Queen Bess’s nickname was the Virgin Queen, so there’s really only one thing he could have done to her to muck up her nickname
Marrying QE1 out-of-character / a sign of madness? In general for the Doctor, yes. But for Ten? I don’t know. This is the man who intended to abduct Madame de Pompadour from the middle of the Seven-Years-War. Even if he had returned her without the whole court panicking because of her disappearance, the TARDIS would’ve fixed her tuberculosis, of which she was scheduled to die in a few years time…
Kingpin: If you remember rightly her nickname was the virgin queen
Love it. This story just keeps getting better Rich!
yeah ten definlty not firing on all slinders anymore hey rich once you finish this comic you should do one on crazy ten going around mucking things up or a insane doctor story where he never realised he crossed the line in water of mars hail timelord victorus
classic, just pure classic there.
it’s just like the doctor to be interrupted by some pompus ass like that, and as the sputtering old man nonetheless, perfect.
Hooray an update!!
OK just my two cents about Queen Bess (thank goodness for youtube…
) we are just presuming that it was “Good Queen Bess” of 15th century *Earth*….
I’d been successfully avoiding all trailers/spoilers etc. for upcoming episodes so I could watch them with without having my enjoyment ruined by knowing anything about what happens next. So I’m *VERY* pissed off that several posters here have given away details about QE1 being in the next one, without any spoiler warnings.
Please can you keep spoilers about upcoming episodes hidden away in the forum etc. where people have to look for them to find them. Thanks.
Rich:
but hadn’t he been messing around with the timeline at the end of WoM?
Even though he said he was sorry, i don’t think he quite got over it, hence the need to be done away with before he turns into Dr Ego…
solar penguin:
While we have tried to be careful about spoiler content in the comments list, however, life is busy and we’ve got more important things to do than constantly policing the readers. So I suggest that if you’re that concerned about accidently reading spoilers in the comments page, that you avoid reading the other comments.
Seriously, people. Please try to avoid posting about things that have happened in very recent episodes (and I’m guity of it too, so I’ll be on guard myself) because lots of readers haven’t seen them yet. If you absolutely MUST, then please put up a warning.
Nice to see a cameo from One
Is Three wearing the same hat?
I don’t know this seems rather petty to me, but you know he’s the Doctor he can hate whoever he wants, I guess.
BTW when is the reference to the Queen made? I missed it, but read it on the Tardis Wiki.
Oh, for those who hasn’t notice the Doctor is completely bonkers right now, didn’t you hear all that “Time Lord Victorious” nonesense he was talking about? He finally snaped
Perhaps this is why the 3rd Doctor calls his car Bessie?
Anyway great comic as usual Rich.
Nice to see a guest appearance of 1.
Yay for One!
I was wondering when we’d see another Doctor crop up…
Great work Rich!
BTW, I always belileved he was an uncomfortable witness for QE1 (for example he found proof that she was no virgin at the wrong moment), so that’s why she wanted to destroy him later in her timeline. And he got married, we guess that since River Song.
But he could be in charge of impersonating the Queen’s husband at some moment, if you prefer. Or he could be joking, or mad….
I like a lot when Rich uses different Doctor incarnations on flashbacks. Thank God! This can’t be done on tv due to obvious reasons. But being a face-changer, different faces for different times make a lot of sense!
It was nice seeing One … and I’m curious too – I’d bet Vicky would be a likely companion tho -she’d stay out of the way if the Doctor asked her too, and she’s the sort he’d love to spoil and share his favorite time periods with … and it would have to be after Barbara and Ian left, he wasn’t impressed with humans before them, but her love of history would be contagious – she’d have dragged him there if it was still a time with her around
Well, actually everyone, it’s supposed to be pre-series 1st Doctor. Probably shortly before “The 10 Doctors”. That *is* supposed to be Susan beside him in the 6th panel. However, I’ve never been very good at drawing her likeness. Need more reference next time.
I’m kinda bored so I’m gonna comment that the new series can use other Doctors in flashbacks, they have 26 years worth of adventures; they did it in the SJA recent story “The Mad Woman in the Attic” when Sarah Jane was having flashbacks of the most important moments in her life, with 3 and 4. Also I think they did that in “Mawdryn Undead” when the Brig had amnesia and couldn’t remember the Doctor.
They had something like that in “The Next Doctor” when they see all 10 Doctors in the Cyberman data storage device.
Thanks for verifying the fact Rich, but the first Doctor’s companion was recognizable as Susan to me.
I’ll speak up as one of those who skipped most of the comments when he realized they were talking about Waters of Mars. I may be alone in this, but I’m actually waiting to see the episode when it airs on BBC America next month. Heck, maybe by then my cable system will have BBCA-HD.
I just find it hilarious that Rich goes and mentions the Doctor admiring QE1 and then the Doctor mentions getting married to her. Rich seems to do that a lot, it’s very strange…
Admit it already Rich, you actually own a TARDIS.
Enjoyed that one!
Such is the magic of Dr Who; a single reference in an episode (especially where only part-answering a big plothole) leads to so much discussion – we’ve effectively written a new story here!
Roll on 4, 9 and any future regenerations all on RMS Titanic (the real one)…!
Well the Doctor promotes discussion as we don’t know anything about his past. He is a very misterious dude, 40 years laters and we’re still wondering what his first name is!
On an unrelated manner; Rich, would you consider making a cartoon with the Teenage Dalek, because that would be awesome!
“Eh? What? [splutter]”
Hilarious!
Fantastic! I especially appreciate the continuity nod to the Curse of Peladon.
I’m also amused that the Doctor’s entire reason for coming down so hard against Dudley seems to be “he cut in front of me in line once.” But then, Hartnell in particular always could hold a grudge.
Thanks for another great installment!
I did see her (now known as Susan
) standing next to One, but she didn’t look like Vicky – I had automatically crossed off Susan and Barbara as I didnt think the Doctor was impressed by any humans till after Ian and Barbara won him over, – didn’t think he’d have a human hero he’d want to meet before then. Ah well.
Aww the poor Doctor. He got his hopes up and everything. I think it would be pretty silly if this is the Doctor’s sole reason for disliking Dudley. But then again, the Doctor always did have a problem “playing nice” with others. The smallest of things, or the slightest hint of smugness or stupidity always sets him off. It’s always wonderful to watch
.
Animate Mush: Curse of Peladon Reference? Where? I must find it.
Rich: I thought it was Susan standing next to the Doctor originally, but then she disappeared in subsequent panels, so I assumed later that she was just another person in the crowd. Thanks for confirming. But yeah, I definitely saw Susan, so I’m sure the quality of your drawing is just fine. Along the same lines, I LOVE the way you draw the third Doctor. I’ve always found his eyes are tough to get down, but every picture of him you put up is simply perfect. Each one screams Pertwee. Love it love it love it. Can’t wait for more.
Jennifer: To quote Curse of Peladon, Episode 4
JO: At least we get to see a real coronation before we go, eh?
DOCTOR: Yes, that’s true. You know, I haven’t seen a coronation since Elizabeth the first’s…or was it Queen Victoria?
JO: Name dropper!
M’reen: “Now known as Susan”? There’s nothing in the show to suggest that she wasn’t called Susan before.
As for the Doctor’s attitude towards Humans, it is known in “An Unearthly Child” and several other early episodes that the Doctor and Susan had visited various places in Earth’s history before settling down for a few months for repairs in 1963. We know he’d been to Rome and the French Revolution (his favorite period, apparently) and a few other places at least.
Her nickname was “Good Queen Bess”, whereas she was about as good as… well, she was better than Stalin or Mao, but worse than most European monarchs you can name. She was a tyrant ruling by fear and spies and money and lots of killing of her own subjects. She remade England in a really scary image, for her own profit.
Bad Queen Bess. Bloody Queen Bess, really. So that’s why her nickname can no longer to be said with a straight face. But of course, the Doctor’s an alien who was mostly exposed to the Tudor propaganda version of English. So it’s understandable that he admired the woman until he spent more time with her and saw how evil she was.
