In the Doctor’s lab, Beverly notes that a Police Box is unusual. They enter the TARDIS and take off, just as the Brig was looking to consult the Doctor about something.

Ah, yes. Classic Brig – just in time to see the Doctor leaving. Lovin’ it!
First comment ever, YAY! Love the “bigger on the inside” line. Classic Who, well done Rich!
I’ve always wanted to see a UNIT companion. Thanks Rich!
The Brigadier must be used to that by now!
Ha, ha, ha! Oh, poor old Brigadier. But hey! That’s our Doctor!
Makes me wonder what the Brig was coming to ask him about….
Nice work as usual Rich and Hilary!
I’m loving that couch in the first panel. If I had a lab I would put a couch in it too.
Some kind of ‘closet seance’ indeed.
If you get my meaning.*wink* *wink* *nudge* nudge*
Like Third’s old-style TARDIS key, too!
My wife is a true dyed in the wool Doctor fanatic, and has been since she saw her first episode back in 1982. So I will be saving these for her.
Well done and you have the Doctor, and U.N.I.T. down quite well. Too bad a secret Army agency had a large sign in the front announcing who they were. eh? And personally, I like old curly top best. So far.
They’re not secret… it’s just that no-one knows what they really do.
Almost perfect. I did more expect a more exasperated and frustrated Brig kind of comment. You know what I mean. The temper just *almost* breaking the surface of the Brig’s classic British stiff-upper-lippedness. *But* the more I look at this page, the more I can hear Nicholas Courtney delivering the line.
Hangin’ on every panel, thanks as always.
YES! Bigger on the inside….how did I guess you were going to put that in there Rich?
That’s my favourite line, heheh
Oooh, that ending is reminiscent to the close of “Robot.” Three is far from my favorite doctor, but since you gave Five so much time in the last piece, i’ll live with it. Excellent choice in deciding to portray the period between Jo Grant’s departure and Sarah Jane’s entrance. Will we get a Ten Doctors-like photo outro leading into the TV series, one wonders…?
Cameo by the Brig! And Powell almost got to say the ‘It’s bigger on the inside than the outside!” line (loved it when Peter said it the other way in the tight confines of the Concord
)
Gotta let it loose…
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Thanks for the Brig!!!!! I’ve been waiting forever for him!!!!!
(you do realize that for me to squee, it’s a feat!)
a.
wasn’t the tardis disabled by the timelords at this point?
Hehehehe… And off they go!
Kronus: No, this was after The Three Doctors, so the TARDIS is fully operational.
hi!
poor brig!
he always vanishes before the brig gets to ask
kronus: This is the period after “The Three Doctors” (when the Time Lords restored the Doctor’s ability to operate the TARDIS). Specifically, this story is taking place between Jo’s departure and Sarah Jane’s arrival.
And hey – the Brig pops in.
Sweet.
I love the Brig’s reaction. Nothing fazes him anymore, does it?
After being around the Doctor as long as he has, the Brig isn’t fazed by anything the Doctor does anymore!
I love the second panel.
“Doesn’t everyone?”
Popping into a closet with a man you don’t know? Shaaaaame on you, Beverly!
Being an Historian Powell will certainly enjoy this, isn’t she?
I always loved that the TARDIS dematerialized immediately after the door closed in. Sometimes I think the Doctor RUNS to that console.
Brilliant… I wonder, is the Brigadier trying to get the Doctor’s help on missing scientists (as we’ll see in The Time Warrior), or is this setting up another plot thread (or another adventure) for after the Doctor and Powell get back?
“I’m loving that couch in the first panel. If I had a lab I would put a couch in it too.” Well, I’d put a Tardis in it first, but the couch would be right up there.
“No, this was after The Three Doctors, so the TARDIS is fully operational.” Fully? That’s a bit of an overstatement.
Nice detail on the TARDIS key!!!
“….never mind then.” BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Three has grown on me over the years.
Oh, Brig. *hugs him*
I kinda hope they end up somewhere nowhere near 1588… XD
kittystitcher: From past experience the odds are good that they end up somewhere which looks like an abandoned slate quarry
Poor Brigadier. Woo hoo, I got to say poor somebody again!
Love the key(I have one myself on my pertwee outfit). The Doctor is lucky the Brig did not see Beverly go into the TARDIS,”Doctor return my staff at once!”
No3 is my hubby and me’s Doctor – and Yes – I also have a tardis key – doesn’t everyone?
love it.
I can hear Pertwee in every line, Rich (or Hilary). Well done!
Yay for Brig cameo!
You draw him so handsomely.
lol great refrence to get smart’s cone of silence :p
and off they go, just in time to annoy the boss lol
Awww, poor Brig. I forget–is the actor still alive, and if so, has he had a cameo in the new series yet? It’d be fun for the old retired boy to show up and finally get *annoyed* at the Doc? “Did the thought ever cross your mind to *invite* me along on one of your little adventures? The only times I got to leave that bloody forsaken base was the handful of times I got kidnapped or had to go get shown up by you dealing with some menace that was bulletproof anyway. :-/”
Vulpis,
Was portrayed by stage name Nicholas Courtner (Birth Name William Nicholas Stone Courtney). He is still alive at 79. Born in 16 December 1929 in Cairo, Egypt. He’s rumored to appear as the Brig in the Sarah Jane Adventures for her wedding. The 10th Doctor is also supposed to make an appearance so he and the Doctor may appear together again.
Vulpis & Herny: Nicholas Courtney had a stroke at the beginning of the year which meant he had to cancel his parts in both the SJA and the Fourth Doctor audio miniseries, Hornets’ Nest. By all accounts he is recovering well http://sarahjanetv.blogspot.com/2009/08/2entertain-shot-liberty-hall.html
This is the first I heard about his stroke. It’s so sad to think about it. :’( I hope that he’ll make a full recovery, and maybe he’ll still be able to make an appearance at some point back in the Whoniverse. I think there have been too many missed chances to have him make an appearance in the past.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched classic Doctor Who, but… It strikes me as somewhat out of character that he’d just spirit somebody away to another century without giving them the chance to choose first. Maybe he’s done that a hundred times and I’m just not remembering… But it’s a dangerous thing to do, and for all he knows this woman could be furious or even have a total breakdown.
Monsters and Rockets: Most companions did ask to travel with the Doctor. Except for The First Doctors assistants, with at least five* stumbling onboard uninvited immediately before take-off (Ian, Barbara, Dodo, Polly, Ben). I think that the Second Doctor got fed up & must have got the doors fixed
*Maybe six if Susan didn’t voluntarily join her grandfather on his adventures.
Technically, you’re in a sort of pocket universe as soon as you step onboard the TARDIS, and the Doctor has no compunctions about getting people’s consent to that.
Anyway, he did in fact ask her if she wanted to come talk to Dudley, and she did in fact accept this offer. That’s consent. Maybe not informed consent, but we don’t have informed consent for most of our actions in regular life. (Nobody warns you explicitly of the probable consequences of crossing the street, unless you’re 4 or 5.)
WalksInEternity
You forgot Steven, who also stumbled aboard during the first Doctor’s era. Later on Sarah Jane Smith and Tegan both joined that way too.
Whoops! Good catch, solar penguin!
Vulpis, Henry, & WalksInEternity: the Brig did have a guest role in the SJA series 2 finale, “Enemy of the Bane.” His one-word response (”Oh.”) to Sarah Jane’s statement of the exact help she wants from him is one of my favorite moments – so very Brigadier!
mrfranklin: Nicholas Courtney was originally due to appear again in the upcoming Third Series Sarah Jane Adventures story, ‘The Wedding of SJS’, but due to his illness, he had to cancel. Sorry if I wasn’t clear
WalksInEternity – no, that was clear. It just didn’t sound like anyone had noticed his previous appearance (based on Vulpis’ original question). Maybe I just misinterpreted the chatter, and folks were just interested in seeing him next to the Doctor again. *blush*
I love your artwork!! This is AWSOME!!!
The brig was problably going to tell the doctor about the misssing scentists in The Time Warrior
