The Doctor and Powell discuss Robert Dudley’s involvement in the death of his wife, but Powell-maintaining a belief in Dudley’s innocence deduces that it’s all conjecture anyway. Again, the Doctor disagrees, deciding to take Powell on a trip to vist and meet with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, sometime before his death in 1588.

Oh, this is looking promising…can’t wait to see her expression when she sees the TARDIS!
Hmmmm…..Why do I have a feeling that the Tardis is going to play up again and they’ll land up anywhere anytime but during Dudley’s lifetime.
Fantastic work as usual, Rich and Hillary!
I’m confused. This is right before Jo, right? Isn’t the TARDIS still disabled (this would be pre-3 Doctors)? I’m a little fuzzy on the era.
Cool. Very much looking forward to this, much more so than the Forever Janette story (purely because I have no familiarity with Forever Knight, not due to any shortcomings of the story or art).
3’s one of my favorite Doctors, and your timing is good as the story serves as a memorial of sorts to the great and sadly departed Barry Letts…
RenGeek this is right AFTER Jo, so the Three Doctors has already taken place, I think its set between The Green Death, in which Jo leaves, and the Time Warrior, in which SJS arrives.
More great work, Rich. I’m guessing 3’s Tardis might not live up to his promises…
Ooh…!
I’m loving it Rich and Hilary. I have to say your stories are right up there with the best canon stuff. It just doesn’t feel like fanfic. Keep up the good work!
I’d forgotten how much I missed watching Three. I wonder how long until he waxes on about how amazing Metebelis 3 is? Good stuff.
Casual time travel: Because the hell you should give up on a history argument.
Just hope she likes rubbish dumps.
I agree Kapn, Rich’s work feels so professional, it’s miles beyond most of the fan fiction I’ve seen. (It probably has something to do with the fact that he’s apparently a pro animator by day. So, this isn’t the work of a random fan, it’s fan fiction by a professional artist.)
I am such a huge history geek, this is making my day! *glee!*
Heheh. That moment when someone discovers the TARDIS for the first time is one of my favourite Who moments. Will there be the legendary comment of ‘It’s bigger on the inside’…?
I agree with kapn, your work is difinitively above other fan fiction and, for that matter, better than a good chunk of the novels. Keep up the good work.
I know we’re just at the meet-and-greet stage with the Doctor and Powell, but why do I get the feeling that the Master is lurking about this tale?
We never got to see how the old boy wound up looking all crispy-fried and crazy. Plus, the Master’s further appearances were written off after Roger Delgado’s tragic death.
Otherwise, I’m willing to wait and see where this goes.
And it’s goin’ pretty good.
HA HA im likeing this one am at uni now and havent had the internet 4 over a month but i got it 4 now so iv cought up at last oh by the way loved forever jannet just cracking that was well doen rich
niiiice
im really enjoying this new third doctor adventrue
Maybe we’re going to find out why Elizabeth I tried to kill the Doctor in the Shakespeare Code. Although that would raise the question of how she recognises him 7 regenerations later.
Fantastic page, Rich.
What a fun turn of events. The Doctor must be a bit bored to just go jumping around at random, but that’s him.
You’ve really captured 3s voice here, I can here Pertwee in the back of my mind as I read the dialog. Well done. With how good you are at capturing the different Doctors, have you thought about sending something into DWM?
(I’ve caffeinated first; there should be no stupid in the following comment.)
This is, as usual, fabulous. I can hear Pertwee saying every one of those lines. And the expressions on Powell’s face are priceless. But I definitely agree with previous people. If the TARDIS behaves enough to get them to the right point in time and space, I’ll be insanely impressed. (I’ll also wonder who’s been stroking her in the Doctor’s absence.)
Wait, I thought his TARDIS didn’t work during the begining the the third Doctor series
Excellent, very promising. And the Doctor really will do anything to prove he’s right!
Oh and Zal, the TARDIS did work from the midway point on. He was granted full use of it in return for saving the Time Lords in ‘The Three Doctors’.
Actually, I figure something worse than the TARDIS playing up is going to happen–it’s going to work perfectly for a change…and either the historian, the Doc, or *both* are going to get mistaken for key players in the little drama they were discussing..
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say, there’s no Master, and the TARDIS will go more or less wher it’s supposed to go. She’s a historian, so what we may be getting here is a pure historical; that is, no aliens, no monsters, no anacronyms except the TARDIS, the Doctor, and Beverly.
They’ll either witness history happening, or inadvertantly cause it to happen as it should.
She is REALLY getting confused now.
Powell shouldn’t have talked to the Doctor, now she’s in for some serious Paradigm Shifting
I’m liking Powell already, Rich. Great characterisation in the first few pages. Three is, as people have said, spot-on, especially some of the expressions.
I am waiting for Beverly’s reaction when she sees the TARDIS, then sees the inside
roflmfao
it’s hilarious when you’re a time traveller talking to a historian who doesen’t know who you are.
Oh, wait, I think I get it. He can’t leave Earth but he can travel to the past!
carol: Nope. At this point his TARDIS functions as well as it ever did. This is *after* “The Three Doctors”, in which the Time Lords lift the banishment and return his ability to fly through time and space in return for saving their pompous asses from Omega. He’d just gotten into the habit of sticking around and helping UNIT most of the time. He leaves for good soon after his regeneration into the 4th Doctor.
To use a metaphor common in the US: she’s about to experience the Board of Education upon the Seat of Learning…..:D
a.
This is interesting . . . so who is the stalker,,, is it creature or a man or an alien? And is this stalker responsible for the death of Elizabeth?
Oops I mean for the death of Amy Robsart his wife not Elizabeth 1. LoL.
Man, this didn’t take long for trouble to start.
The Doctor is going to time travel just to prove he is right in an arguement. HEH!!!!
Sounds just like the Doctor to use time travel just to win an argument. Tsk. I can just tell this is all going to end in tears…
Good comic, as always!
The 3rd Doctor stayed on Earth, for the most part, after his sentence was lifted by the Timelords, but most of the Doctor’s incarnations, except the 4th, seemed to have a very strong connection with the Earth. Even if they didn’t make their homes on the planet they visited on a fairly regular bases. Most of the known companions have been from Earth, or that’s usually where they were picked up from. Except of course, for the 4th Doctor, again. So I don’t find it at all unusual that the 3rd Doctor is still working with UNIT after his TARDIS was functioning again, or at least as well as can be expected. I would’ve only been surprised with this story if it wound up being a 1st or 4th Doctor story since the 1st Doctor is the only one known to have never worked with UNIT, and the 4th Doctor tended to stay away from Earth as much as possible.
LOL!! Powell’s expression is PRICELESS!!!!!

@Arcalian: TARDIS and UNIT are acronyms. The Doctor is always an anachronism. An acronym is the first letters of words, put together to make another word. An anachronism is something that is out of place in time (it means “against time”). However, I’m certain something will turn up that isn’t in the history books. Whether an anachronism, an alien or something else, I don’t know.
hmm I still wish you would do a crossover comic where the doctor encounters something like the hitch hiker’s guide to the galaxy, but this still looks promising.
oh god is she in for it lol, she’s going to pee herself when she realizes what he’s about to do to her. :p
…or when he’s about to do to her lol
I guess it depends on how you look at it.
Wow that was out of the blue, just asking her to come with him to go see that guy. Lol.
They’ve got to arrive at the right time. Rich and Hilary are too good at writing to set up the big murder mystery of who killed Dudley’s wife, and then wimp out by not answering it.
I wonder if she was an invading alien and the Doctor kills her…?
Henry:
Not entirely sure what inspired you Doctor Who history lesson there, but to correct you: The 1st, 6th and 8th Doctors never worked with UNIT (”Dimensions in Time” doesn’t count since it wasn’t REALLY the 6th Doctor with the Brigadier in that shot, but the 7th Doctor and Ace. Also, that show was a crap special and there’s no real reason to consider any of it canon.) The 4th Doctor has often mentioned that Earth was his very favorite planet, especially in a moderately moving speech near the beginning of “The Ark in Space”.
All of a sudden I’m reminded of my favorite Tenth Doctor quote, from “Silence in the Library”:
“I’m a time traveller. I point and laugh at archaeologists.”
Wonder if he feels the same way about historians……
Great start, Hilary and Rich!
Elizabeth I. . . bah!
Her father and step-sister were much more interesting. Madness and bloodshed were the call of the day. Chaos is always better than a stable empire for the purposes of the Old Ones.
Bow before Cathulu!
Rich,
I’ve never seen Dimensions in Time, and even if I did I wouldn’t consider it canon.
The 1st Doctor is the only one known not to have worked with UNIT.
From the 4th Doctor adventures I’ve seen he seemed to be the most “Alien” of all of the Doctors so far. I don’t remember many of his adventures occurring on Earth, and he seemed to have the most companions that came from places other than Earth.
Most of the 5th Doctor’s non-human or non-Earth companions were leftovers from the 4th Doctor.
The 6th Doctor had so much more potential than what was ever really shown, and we don’t know for sure that he never worked with UNIT. At least he may have in an unbroadcast adventure. He was beginning to grow on me as the Doctor before he was replaced.
Unfortunately we only have one canon adventure for the 8th Doctor so we really don’t know what he did or didn’t do after that movie.
Rich, you are a man after my own heart. I love 3. He’s always been one of my favorites. And the eye bug out thing you’ve got going on in panels 6&7 is just priceless.
*sits down and gets ready to enjoy another marvelous ride*
No page today? Oh Well, I knew we were having suspense. Wait, how did I know that? Never mind, it’s not like its the first time something weird happens in my family
Continuity: Geez, forgive my accidental wrong choice of word.
Ah 1588,a wonderful year for Who.In history we have the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Essex Witch Trials and….the end of the world as predicted by Regiomontanus,in Quatrain no less…….
The Doctor could have been (and probably was) involved in all of these, diverting disaster and saving the day.
Wow us Rich.
Dave: As mentioned by the Fifth Doctor in Four to Doomsday, he had previously played nine pins with Francis Drake when Drake was called away to fight the Spanish Armada (the Doctor saying he let Drake win so he could get away in time to join the fight). It wasn’t mentioned which incarnation it was, though…
I love Rich’s comics but this time I’m really excited!
Doctor 3 was my favorite!
XDD I can totally hear Jon’s voice right now!
Fantastic Work. Been lurking for a while. I’ve been recommending your work, Rich!
As for John who is looking for a Crossover to HGTTG (Hitchhikers Guide…) you can find something similar. Douglas Adams wrote for Dr. Who. Such episodes as “The Pirate Planet” bear his signature wit. You’ll see other references in this Wiki (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Christmas_Invasion). I have even heard it rumored that the 3rd book of HGTTG started as a Dr. Who script and was adapted. ….but I digress….
The 3rd hikers did start out as Dr Who and the bannermen, I believe.
Oh and Matelot doesn’t the Doctor mention he “ran in to the Queen in 1588″ trying to impress Alpha Centauri in the serial The Curse of Peladon?
Maybe five will show up and we will have another multi Doctor story…….:)
Re: HGTTG Crossovers
It was the rejected 4th Doctor synopsis “Dr Who and The Krikkitmen”, that formed the basis for the 3rd HGTTG book…
Some elements from the uncompleted 4th Doctor story Shada, reportedly made it into the Dirk Gently series of books…
@Grimley Fieendish: Very much. Read it, read about Shada, you get a very big feeling of deja vu. Including the time-traveling room….
@Arcalian: Sorry, it’s a bad habit of mine to try and correct other people’s word usage. Just ignore me if it gets annoying.
Dave: Close. In CoP the Third Doctor said that he hasn’t seen a coronation since Elizabeth the First or is not sure if it was Queen Victoria so he quite wasn’t sure. Both Queens hate him anyway, though Elizabeth I in The Shakespeare Code, Victoria in Tooth & Claw.
solar penguin, the doctor never kills if he can avoid it, he’s always been like that. timelord conditioning actually, and it’s stuck with him in all his lives.
well except the start of his tennant one. “no second chances, turns out I’m not that kind of guy this time”. and he drops the alien invader from his ship to plummet to the earth and his death.
Amother Rich, he don’t laugh at historians. HE IS A HISTORIAN, he just has a better exploration tool then the rest of them :p why else keep going through time and space like he does?
Henry, the first doctor never had anything to do with UNIT o_o he had a granddaughter, and travelled with her and her teachers at first.
Nice Job Rich!, well then I don’t see the harm in doing a crossover, it would also be canon.
Dave, I think multidoctors are a little much to deal with any more. I mean the ten doctors did kick ass, but the more he crosses into his own timeline, the more things get fucked up. (such as all but one temporal copy of the TARDIS no longer working, thanks to what happened to the timelord homeworld. other stuff like this could happen)
Matelot, like you said it. they all seem to hate him. half the time it’s either because of his companion, or the companion helped too (such as the whole “we are NOT amused” bet he had with rose). hell, one of them charged him screaming OFF WITH HIS HEAD, he hadn’t even met her yet! lmao. You know it’s bad when someone you’ve not even met yet already hates you.
John,
I said that the 1st Doctor is the only one known not to have worked with UNIT. It’s the 6th and 8th Doctors we can’t really be sure of. Since the 6th Doctor, Collin Baker, had the shortest run as the Doctor until the 8th Doctor, and we can’t really be sure about any of their unbroadcast adventures.
@Arcalian and Continuity: so would an anachronym be a name in the wrong time?
John,
The Doctor isn’t Batman. Although he always prefers not to kill, he will kill in self defence if it’s absolutely necessary. This has been more-or-less consistent through all his regenerations.
@TrivialofAus: An abbreviation of a name in a wrong time perhaps?
Solar Penguin,
That’s why John said that he ‘never kills if he can avoid it’ not meaning ‘he never kills’
In his 5th regeneration he didn’t kill. He was a pacifist. He was around a lot of death, granted, but none of it was orchestrated by his hand (as far as I can remember, it was a few years ago that I saw all his episodes)
Though, as far as I can tell, aside from when 10 battled on the Christmas Day special, killing his opponent after he tried to attack him when his back was turned…I’ve never actually seen the Doctor kill someone. Accidents and omissions may have been the cause of of their demise, but I’m not sure where that would fall under in the laws of killing…
Arianna–what about Shockeye in Two Doctors? (I’ve read that, never seen the story)
Love how you draw Three
Plus I like him even more than Eight.
