first! love the shading rich
hmmm… what are the things below shot in panels 6 & 8 I wonder…..
Cathulu is displeased when vampires get all angsty and misty eyed.
Rule the human cattle!
Bathe in the blood of your enemies!
Let the Earth shake under your iron fists!
Leave interesting toys on the altar of Cathulu!
And before you go. . .
Bow before Cathulu!
I love the shading on this page Rich
But, um, shouldn’t panel 4 say ‘I did not come here’ instead of ‘I did not come her’…?
That blasted ‘e’! It never stays put when you want it to!
I have a theory about who she’s leaving with… but I dare not say it…
Um, why is LaCroix putting a box of cereal on a bookshelf? Oh wait, I bet it’s actually Oatmeal Crisp!
(It’s no’ oatmeal!).
Also, I hesitate to ask what’s brewing in that cute tea pot.
Great artwork on this page, Rich.
Is this filling in some FK continuity?
Incidentally, I don’t think I ever mentioned how much I love the red highlights on the next.previous buttons. Gorgeous job, Hilary!
Oh, and also I spotted this: “I did not come _her_ to talk about Nicholas.”
Mark: Yes, it is. This story is set between 2nd and 3rd seasons, a time span in which Janette leaves Toronto (and Deborah Duchene left the show) for greener pastures. I can’t take credit for the buttons, alas – they came with the theme I’m using currently. I have some plans to mess with the colours and style a bit more, but it won’t happen this semester.
Confused LaCroix is confused! And prepared to be all smarmy at Nicolas when he does find out…
I am really loving these comics, Rich. You’ve got a good idea of what all the characters sound like, so I end up hearing (in my head!) the actors reading off this dialog, and as a result, seeing new updates here is something that fills me with glee.
Well, Paulus filled me with glee, too, but this is much more of a “this is geeky enough I only know one or two people I could babble at about this and have them understand my glee” sort of glee.
i really need to get into forever knights
is it any good? o.o
anyone know?
As Hilary says, this coincides with Janette leaving the show between seasons (didn’t Schanke leave too?). When Janette reappeared, she was cured of vampirism, but never divulged how. (I think)
Yes, I have lurked long upon these pages, but have not seen fit to comment on any of the stories I have kept up with… until now.
Job well done Rich, there is a certain mixture of artwork and words required to tell a good tale and keep the reader entertained in these sorts of stories… and you have captured that mix perfectly.
In the beginning I would glance at your stories from time to time and dismiss them as soon as I was finished. But then I discovered that I was visiting to catch up on a daily basis. Now I am a loyal reader and shall remain so into the foreseeable future.
May we safely look forward to more adventures in the Blue Box?
Thanatos – actually Scanke was killed in the plane crash that brought us Vachon.
Great work as always Rich!
thanatos: She returns, mortal, in “The Human Factor” in third season. Her story is so full of crap, though, and contradicts established cosmology in so many ways, that frankly I think she was lying through her – ah – teeth.
(that’s my story, dammit, and I’m sticking to it. HF is FK’s ‘Turnabout Intruder’ episode as far as canon goes, IMO.)
Rick, first of all, before making commnetary on today’s episode, I’d like to thank you for presenting an episode a day for the last few weeks — that’s dedication!
There… now that’s out my system…
I keep waiting for the Doctor to enter the epilogue, or at least mention of him. The vampires’ thoughts about him and the Master, Nat asking about his part in this whole mess, etc. Aside from their encounter with the TARDIS outside the castle, Nick and co. were left with no indication that the Doctor was from outer space (not that that would’ve been an option from their mindset), and right now it would appear everyone’s left assuming he and the Master are some heretofore unknown second race of not-quite-humans.
Not happening exactly like I was hoping for. *crossing fingers* But I did figure you would have the scene of Jeanette leaving LaCroix the Raven nightclub. It was such a biggie that they didn’t film.
I thought Nyssa had told LaCroix while under hypnosis that she & The Doctor were from other worlds, a fact that LaCroix was disbeleiving until about 30 seconds later when the brown stuff started hitting the whirly thing.
Searing Destiny, FK is quite good. Overlook the cheesy FX in the first season and the low budget, and watch truly talented actors bring the characters to life. The scripts for the most part are surprisingly deep, and Nick Knight is a great tragic hero. You can watch eps on hulu.com or get the DVDs from Netflix.
KLCthe BookWorm —
I remember that encounter, but Lacroix dismissed her story as heavy hypnosis (or rather as a spell, as his medieval mindset put it) that the Doctor had her under, and I doubt he would repeat it to Nick and Janette.
The way I read the story, Lacroix probably dismissed the Doctor and the Master as a pair of almost-immortals — probably alchemists who got lucky — with the Master additionally cursed with something akin to lycanthropy. Plus, the flashback was set way before the Industrial Revolution, so he probably didn’t identify anything in the Master’s lab as being machinery, either futuristic or unearthly.
Good characterization here, and I too wait for the Doctor’s epilogue.
Love the look on LaCroix’s face: “Did I miss something?”
Great page, Rich!! ^_^ love this story~
Love the bit of product placement in panel 4. But it’s not oatmeal!
I was figuring that the ‘cereal box’ was actually a cookbook of some sort, myself…
Vulpis: Nigel Bennett, the actor who played LaCroix, did a series of commercials during the time the show was on the air, for a cereal called Oatmeal Raisin Crisp. This became a joke among the cast as well as the fans, so much so that in one outtake on the second-season blooper reel, you see Nick holding up a box of the cereal in place of a cross he’s supposed to be using against LaCroix in a battle sequence. Hilarity ensues.
Nigel, for Oatmeal Raisin Crisp
Edited to add: I found the blooper on YouTube!
There are a handful of fandom in-jokes/references that Rich put into today’s strip to make me giggle. I’m betting that one particular one will remain way too obscure for anyone’s memory but mine.
Oh jeez, the look on Nigel’s face in that outtake. And the sound he makes. Perfect!
Anyway Rich, you’re wrapping up Forever Janette quite nicely. Everything still fits, still feels right. But I can’t help but wonder just where Janette travelled off to. Or maybe even when?
Looking forward to more Doctor Who stories from you (especially that Space: 1999 crossover, the Alphans always desperately needed the Doctor’s help).
But it’s not oatmeal indeed. I lol’d! and am glad others got the joke too. Well played, Rich!
WOW. *Bug-eyed* GREAT page, Rich. I especially love the shading, which I never got the hang of.
And do I dare submit a query somewhere along the lines of, “Is there a Forever Janette show?”
Oh! And, Gentleman Physician…
Welcome aboard! I’m the crazy one who annoys others by posting on other’s postings.
~CoZ
I’m half -expecting that the part where Detective Donald Schanke and Captain Amanda Cohen are about to take a flight because of some police conference or something which ends in disaster because of a bomb planted inside the plane will be mention.
(1st episode of season 3)
I can’t make out what the tea pot is supposed to mean but I think I spot a reference to “Brick” Knight.
War 6, I remember it well…
The teapot is a reference to a vignette written by an FK fanfic writer who went by the screen name Tippi (iirc, the same one who did the vignette with LaCroix reforming inside Nick’s vacuum cleaner – she was a master of the absurd).
It’s mentioned in Black Buddha that LaCroix bought the Raven from Janette “For a song.” Which song? Why, “I’m a little teapot,” of course…
Some images get seared into your brain and never, ever heal.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this…
All right, I had to….I just discovered that I actually have a box of Oatmeal Crisp in my cabinet. I was looking for something else and found it, got it recently too. I guess that means I’m protected from LaCroix, perhaps, hmmmm?
