Forever Janette – 47

Pierre explains how he woke up after the castle exploded, waited for days or weeks until people arrived to loot the castle wreckage. He fed from them and revived himself, then found the TCE lying in the ruins.

  1. Serosis

So, he regenerates into the form he feeds on…

    Fascinating.

  2. Rich

    Serosis:
Actually, no. I just have trouble drawing more than two faces.

  3. Serosis

Sorry spoke too soon, just realized the other guy didn’t have a beard *sheepish*
Anyways, still fascinating that he can just steal life to give himself more “regerations”.

  4. McGann's the Mann

after what the better part of 6 or 7 centuries the TCE is still working perfectly?
    thats craftmenship that is!

  5. Chiscringle

Works first time and every time. The Master wouldn’t be a superior engineer if that weren’t the case.

  6. Koki

Ahhh, now it all makes sense… :D

  7. Mass

Rich, Pierre here looks like a medieval version of you! Ha ha!

Great page once again as the villain monologues the details…. alos explains why the Master no longer has the TCE in his later stories.

  8. Zamael

Being a product of an extremely advanced race, Master’s compressor would sure seem to be rather simple to use.

  9. McGann's the Mann

Chiscringle: unless you’re trying to modify it in your workshop…….

  10. M'reen

McGann’s the Mann – oops! * *tiny squeeky voice*

I love how Pierre thinks the Master did everything he did just for him – so thoughtful, that Master.
    :)
(Tho in a way he’s right – the Master did use it to kill people, but I’m sure other than making a ‘particularly nasty way to go’, he had in mind a way to make the bodies harder to find if he so chose. He did hide them sometimes – other times, left them to show off what he could do.)

  11. astrocitizen

“Wait, Nicholas — that _will_ kill you!”

Or at least make him damned uncomfortable.

Hmmm… this could get interesting. The Doctor has his sonic screwdriver back by time of the Fox movie, and I don’t think there’s ever been a real Sonic Screwdriver vs. TCE fight before…

  12. JustAWanderer

Which explains why the Master stopped using the thing by the time of the Fox film.

  13. Sean

Whoa! The first page to have a daytime scene.

  14. hmc

    JustAWander,

At the start of the Fox Film the Master was executed by the Daleks on Skaro and would have lost his own TCE there and his other belongings there as well I guess.

Of course how the Doctor picked up his remains safetly, what happened to the Master’s TARDIS and how he became a strange snakelike thing able to pocess people have never been really explained, on screen at least.

  15. Jonathan

JustAWanderer: Well, the Daleks may have confiscated it as well, if he got a new one after this.

So, just to be clear: 5 has not yet experienced the events of The 10 Doctors, 8 has, right?

Also: I assume the Master from T10D was after this Master, but before the Eric Roberts one, right? So this Master has not experienced the events of T10D, right?

Just trying to keep things straight?

  16. Sten Darker

woa! Perhaps the snakelike thing will be explained here?

  17. Arcalian

Oh Nicholas, you still ascribe noble motives, even to the worst of people. You fool.

Jonathan: That all sounds correct to me.

  18. Vulpis

Out of curiousity, why does Pierre have dark hair now, when it looked like he was blonde when this started? Or was that just dye?

  19. Hilary

Vulpis: Because he’s already regenerated at least once “onscreen” in this strip.

  20. addude

thats impressive workmanship hundreds of years and the compressor still works like new

  21. Lord President Lundar

He sure got that last part right. :-)

  22. Arianna_BadWolf

HMC: yhe Daleks and Timelords called a temporary truce of sorts so the Doctor would be allowed to pick up his remains. En-route to Gallifrey something happened and they ended up on earth, and the Master, being the kind of guy he is, wasn’t going to let a little thing like execution hold him down…and thus is the Fox movie!

  23. hmc

    Arianna,

Like the Daleks would just let the Doctor land on Skaro and take the Master’s remains without trying to exterminate him. I don’t remember a truce being mentioned in the movie though it has been a while since I saw it.

  24. Rich

Anrianna_Badwolf and hmc: There was never any “truce” that I’d ever heard about. The novel explains that the Doctor recieved the request directly from the Master via telepathy and that he had to sneak onto Skaro to collect his remains. Consequently making Paul McGann’s voiceover narration wrong. Not how I usually go with things, but the novel worked a lot better.
Alternately the movie never MENTIONS the Daleks, only that the trial was on Skaro. I like to think that the Master’s trial happened in a time before the Daleks took over, and he was tried by the Kaleds. The mechanical voice you hear may simply be some kind of Kaled justice machine delivering the sentence.

Jonathan: No, actually. You got it a little wrong.
The 5th Doctor hasn’t experienced “The 10 Doctors” yet. (correct)
The 8th Doctor has come from a point shortly after “The 10 Doctors”. (correct)
The Master in “Forever Janette” is from after “Survival” (end of classic series) and before the Fox film.
The Master in “The 10 Doctors” is from after the FOX film. He is still in the TARDIS core from after the film and takes over the body of the technician who’s come to work on the Doctor’s TARDIS.

  25. JustAWanderer

D’oh! I’d forgotten that there was the little matter of a capture & execution. (But then, we don’t know that he still had the TCE by the time of his trial!) Thanks, all.

  26. Fangarius

Yes, the TCE, like the Energizer, keeps on going, but as the Seventh Doctor once discovered, it doesn’t work too well on inorganic material, since he once attempted using it on Death’s Head once.

Seventh Doctor (frowning): “Don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but if something’s called an Eliminator, one would think it should eliminate something.”

  27. doctorparadox

Well at least the seventh doctor knows that he can use it to make things mini without them exploding.

  28. Derek

@ Mass: Ha! I knew The Third Pierre looked familiar, but I couldn’t quite place him…

Yet another great page, plus we may get to follow a bit of Pierre’s life now, which I had hoped for but thought we had missed out on.

  29. Maki P

Ok, this is really freaking me out

  30. Dave

That was the part of the movie that I didn’t understand. Hadn’t the planet Skaro already been destroyed by the Hand of Omega by the time the movie happened? At least, that would be the case in relative Gallifreyan time, which I always assumed to be concurrent with twentieth and now twenty-first century Earth. It just seemed odd that the Master’s remains would be disposed of in the past. Excellent page, Rich, although I’m concerned that we might get to see what happens when Pierre feeds off a timelord or a vampire at this juncture.

  31. Rich

    Dave:
The show is all about TIME TRAVEL.

  32. Arianna_BadWolf

Thanks Rich. I never really trusted that bit of info myself, no matter the source. I think someone had misprinted information on a Who site (or perhaps I just misunderstood the interpretation)
I wish I had the novel… I think I would have understood better. I guess I’ll just make do with the novels I DO have…(which reminds me, better save them from October before it’s too late!)

  33. Dave

But the timelords consistently use it only for exploration. Even when the Doctor was exiled to Earth, it was during the Gallifreyan ‘present.’ It just seems like something that wouldn’t be allowed to me. Apologies for posting the link if that wasn’t allowed. I looked for rules against that sort of thing, but saw nothing.

  34. Henry

It would seem to me that the Master created the TCE to have very simple controls. In case he ever needed to use it in an emergency. You don’t want to have to rely on a weapon that requires you to spend 10 minutes, setting everything up before you can use it, if you only have 30 seconds before you’re dead.

  35. Ammy

Great writing there Rich. You take the “villain” responsible for the murders and make me feel sorry for him. Poor naive Pierre is as much a victim of the Master’s machinations.
One question – hopefully won’ t trigger any spoiler alerts – reading up on the FK episode guide – in season 3 (which comes after this story) Janette changes back from vampire to human. I’m wondering if “Forever Janette” is a way of adding depth to her motivation to make a pretty darn serious call.

  36. Hilary

Dave – I allow some links that are relevant to whatever discussion is happening about the comic, but if you want to pimp your webcomic, buy advertising space like everybody else.

  37. Dave

It’s not mine, just one I ran across where Ten and Rose appear. Wanted to keep that a surprise for people because that’s what delighted me about it. And I thought it would be of interest. *shrug*

    Again, apologies.

  38. Grimley Fieendish

    Re: Daves Oct 2 post
John Peel “retconned” the Destruction of Skaro, in his Missing Doctor Adventure novel published in the mid 1990’s, in which it was revealed that the Daleks had converted the Planet Antikon to act as a “bulletcatcher”, for Skaro…
In short, Antikon, according to Mr Peel, was destroyed by the Hand Of Omega, not Skaro…
