Heh. “Tarry a moment, there is one thing more.
This note doth give to thee no jot of blood.”

Sorry if my quote’s off, but I detect the spirit of Portia in our scheming slave retrievers. Fitting ends all round, then!

    Oooh a narrow escape!

Hey Rich, how many times did you draw her backside before you got it juuuuusst right? ;)

  8. JustAWanderer

Intriguing. First they capture her, now they rescue her. The plot thickens. I look forward to seeing how this turns out.
Also: I’ve thought of mentioning this a few times in the past, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that recaptured Roman slaves were usually executed. The master could choose to spare their lives, in which case they would be branded with an F (for Fugitivus). (Although I suppose there’d be no reason the owner couldn’t beat them a bit first!)

If a slave committed a crime against the state (rebellion, for instance) execution followed — crucifixion was the preferred method once the Romans learned the trick from Carthage. Just running away is only a crime against the master though, and he’d have more leeway — slaves being a valuable investment, he’s not going to want to kill them if he doesn’t have to.

Witchcraft is a crime against the state, so if they suspect she’s involved in that it gives them an excuse to take her away from her master I doubt they’re really planning to hand her over to the state, though — my guess they suspect witchcraft and want to scare her into ratting out her confederates.

If the slave had just run away, or even run away and used fraud to snag a citizen husband, she’d have had my full sympathy. As it is… well, she deserves something unpleasant, though not the series of beatings that sadistic prick of an owner had in mind. I’m certainly not sorry to see HIM denied his pleasures.

  13. Trevory

Sorry guys, all the alternate strips and stuff in real life makes me forget the basic plot for FVLMINATA (this story, anyway). Can anybody help me and my stupidy out?

  14. Hilary

Trevory: it’s easy enough to catch up – just click on the category link here or in the sidebar, and it’ll take you to a full listing of the strip.

  15. scionofgrace

    Trevory, it’s difficult but I’ll try…
A rich horse-breeder called Paolus decided to get married. A lot of candidates showed up, so his accountat Demetrius narrowed the list down. Paolus interviewed the handful of remaining candidates, but he wasn ‘t completely satisfied.
A witchcraft sisterhood wanted to apply too (just for Paolus’ power and contacts, of course), so they sent Paolus a terrific erotic dream: Paolus automatically decided to marry Lucilia, the girl of the dream (who showed up the next day, sent by her witch masters).
Paolus’ accountant Demetrius decided to stop the wedding. So he summoned three close friends of him and Paolus (actually, Paolus’ ex-slaves, now free because of saving Paolus’ life in the past): the strong female gladiator Midna, the beautiful Safiya and the smart Caliope (now a senator’s wife).
This Lucilia turned out to be a fugitive slave and a gold-digger. As soon as Lucilia learnt (fake) news about a powerful senator searching for a wife, Lucilia dumped the lovesick Paolus… only to be trapped by Caliope, Midna, Safiya and Demetrius, who turned Lucilia back to her former owner.
So Paolus became saved from a bad wedding, but lovesick. And the gold-digger Lucilia was about to be punished when Caliope appears with a strange proposal.
Why would Caliope want to rescue her enemy Lucilia, just after rescuing her friend Paolus from Lucilia? No idea, but Caliope is as smart as a mafia leader!
    I hope this helps…

I almost forgot to check the site for the update on House of Paulus! SHAME!

Brilliant page, Rich! I knew they wouldn’t let the poor wretch get beaten. ^_^ (I totally didn’t XD)

  20. Nieves

By the way, sorry but my former summary lacks the best virtue of Paolus’ adventures: jokes and fun! If you want to enjoy this story, I recommend you to find time read the strips instead…

  21. Darren

    Booty!

  22. A Ninja

Huh. Nice to see Calliope’s staying on top of things.

  23. violinvictory

Demetrius is a guy? I always thought Demetrius was a girl!

  24. WhoRU?

Woot another slave saved!!! Does she get to be free or work for Calliope???

  25. Tamfang

    Wow, a vocative!
