Forever Janette – 16

Nick and Nat discuss the possibility of the culprit being alien and she gives him another of her mystery vampire cures. She walks Nick to the door as he leaves to try to get more information and the Doctor returns to the lab. He discover’s Nat’s strange concoction and wonders what she’s up to.

Ahh, the plot thickens. (PS: First Post)

  2. The Cat Who Walks Alone

Rich – did you plan 8’s Grace line in this strip, or were you inspired by recent comments on one of this week’s strips?

I’m guessing that in the FKverse, garlic has a different effect on vampires to popular myth. (Heck, in the Marvel universe, garlic extract and anticoagulants, if injected, make a vampire explode. At least, if I’m remembering Blade correctly…)

  3. IasasaI

I wonder just how many nasty concoctions of Nat’s that Nick has had to endure thus far…

  4. Hilary

Cat: Rich has about a two-week buffer drawn on these strips already, so no, it wasn’t inspired by the comments.

And in the FK-verse garlic is an irritant to vampires, not an insta-kill. In second season Nick gets shot by a hunter who’s got garlic oil on her bullets – he later describes the sensation to Nat as extremely painful, and it certainly throws him off-balance during the fight, but it doesn’t cause permanent damage.

  5. Cathulu

Cathulu enjoys sacrifices sauted in butter and garlic. Sacrifice scampi rocks! Do not yet think the Timelord will win, we plan to make him suffer. Bow before Cathulu!

  6. searingdestiny

    awesome and amazing!

i wonder what it really tastes like (blech probably) (:
sory 4 asking but where is forever knights set again?
i really want to get into it more and see if i can get the dvds cause it looks cool(:

  7. herk

“Trust me, it’s good for you.”

How many times Nat said that to Nick I wonder ;)

  8. searingdestiny

sorry for the two comment thing again.
i won’t be here for the next five days but when you get the chance to comment back to me heres my email maybe i can send it to you.
—email removed by admin for security purposes–

if im bothering you i apologise extremly its just i really badly want to end up writing a doctor 8 story and i want an opinion from someone who likes doctor who about my style of writing (:

    SORRY AGAIN *bows head apolitically*

  9. Pete

I don’t know this show at all. Some questions: Does Schanke know that Nick is a vampire? What’s the concoction for, is is supposed to turn him human, or something?

  10. Rich

searingdestiny: The show is set in Toronto, Canada in the mid 1990s (that’s when the show was made). This story takes place between seasons 2 and 3 (see episode guide page).

Pete: Nope, Schanke doesn’t know Nick’s a vampire and yes, Nat is trying to help Nick become Human again.

  11. Monsters and Rockets

Was Forever Knight a big deal up North? I’m in the US and I’m a big geek for vampires, and I made it through the ’90s only dimly aware this show existed. (I think here it was on at 2 PM on Sunday afternoons, or something.) I was wondering if FK was a bigger hit on its home turf. The stuff in this strip makes me curious to check out the show sometime.

  12. The Cat Who Walks Alone

    Thanks for that, Hilary :)
Still – loving the strip. And the comments. All hail the mighty Cathulu! ;)

  13. Glenn Jupp

Excellent reaction shot of Nick. If he screwed up his face any more then he could be swallowing his own nose.

And the Doctor has quite the frowny-face going on. It’s always fun when protagonists are suspicious and distrustful of each other :) Good stuff Rich!

  14. gecks

ooooooh gotta watch those anticoagulants around time lords!

  15. WhoRU?

    this is getting interesting . . .

  16. Jonathan

Hahahaha, Nick and the Doctor seem to keep missing one another. How long until our heroes meet? And will they recognize one another???!

  17. Koki

Heehee, i love the classic ‘Aw, just missed each other’ comedy in here :D Makes me think of ‘Partner’s in crime’ with Donna and the Doctor popping up and down like a whack-a-mole machine :D

    Getting more interesting now… :)

  18. thanatos

Forever Knight is set in Toronto – the CN tower is plainly visible in the opening credits. Blood Ties was also set in Toronto, but operated under a different set of rules that would preclude a meeting between Nick and Fitzroy.

Schanke doesn’t know Nick’s a vamp. He dies at the beginning of series 3, so this takes place somewhere between May’92 -Aug’95. (Tracy Vetter is his replacement)

In the initial pilot, ‘Nick Knight’, Nick was played by Rick Springfield.

  19. nievesg

Well, the anticoagulants and garlic will call the Doctor’s attention enough to meet Nick shortly!

  20. carol

Uh-oh, Nick is going to have trouble if 8 figures out what he is! :)

  21. Pete

Another question, what exactly is Nick’s job? Is he an official police detective? Some sort of independent consultant? A busybody who sticks his nose in, who has no official standing (Like The Doctor)?

  22. Hilary

Pete: Nick is a homicide detective, as of season 2 working out of the 96th precinct (downtown Toronto) under Captain Cohen, and one of the stars of the department for cases solved. Schanke was assigned as his partner in the pilot and they’ve been working together (on the night shift, of course!) ever since.

At the point in time where the comic is set Nick has been living and working in Toronto for about five years, and he and Schanke have been with the 96th for just over one. They were both at the 27th precinct under Captain Stonetree before that.

  23. JustAWanderer

Inspired by the comments or not, I just get a kick out of the fact that the Doctor suffered from the same “Grace” confusion that afflicted so many readers. I guess it’s true what they say about great minds!

  24. Vulpis

*grin* I love the banter about ‘You’ll be having lunch with Schanke in no time’ and that being incentive to *stay* a vampire… Rich has definitely nailed FK well in this.

  25. Lord President Lundar

Why do I have a feeling that Nick’s informant about the murders is the Master?

  26. plurgid

    *sniff* … most awesome panel

  27. Firebrand

Goodness gracious. A Forever Knight/Doctor Who crossover? Two of my most favorite things brought together…and done very, very well, I might add!

Loved your Ten Doctors series, Rich–it’s helped me and other ‘Who fans survive the between-series slump. If this crossover comic ends up half as good as The Ten Doctors, I think I’ll be in for a real treat. :)

  28. kittystitcher

Nick ‘thinks he knows someone’, hmmm?

Why do I get the feeling he’s going to be knocking on a certain blue police box before too much longer?

And I continue to be amused by Eight and Nick just missing each other.

  29. Sean

Her name is really Natalie Lambert?

    Huh. How appropriate…

  30. violinvictory

The plot is definitely thickening, but when will we get back to 1348, with the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa? I really want to know what’s gonna happen to them!

  31. Countess

Even though anticoagulants are involved in my work, I’ve never actually sniffed them. I suspect that to me they would smell like water. I continue to be amazed at the Doctor’s ability to sense things that humans would not (example: when he licked the walls in that episode with the werewolf).

Monsters and Rockets: Forever Knight was more of a cult show than a big hit here in Canada, though it was shown in prime time.

  32. Maki P

Missed him again. How long will it take for them to meet? And what’s up with the Doc’s hair? It looks…. weird.

  33. Arcalian

I think the Doctor thinks that maybe Doctor Lambert is the vampire, ironically.

Wonder what Janette is up to….

  34. Romanadvoratrelundar

Maki P: The Eighth Doctor’s hair is curly.. how’s that weird? o0

  35. Kino

Actually, for those of you interested in seeing Forever Knight, I just recently noticed that it’s one of the few shows available for watching on Youtube’s Show section.

  36. Brightknightie

A friend clued me in about your story this week, and I caught up today. This is delightful and exciting. I’ve wanted to see Forever Knight as a comic for years and years! Seeing Janette and Nick look up at the light on top of the TARDIS and knowing those looks for an oncoming flashback filled me with glee as well as amusement. I’ve added the RSS feed to the LiveJournal syndication; I hope that’s all right. This is delightful; thank you so much for sharing with us.

  37. violinvictory

How many pages of Forever Janette did you create? I assume you’ve drawn a lot, considering you’re posting a page every other day. How many pages is your other story House of Paulus? Will it be finished soon? I apologize if I am annoying you, but I am really anxious for the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa–if a single strand of the Fifth Doctor’s blond is touched, I will scream bloody murder!

  38. Rich

    Brightnightie:
Welcome aboard! I’m glad peope are catching on to this from the other end of the fandom!

    violinvictory:
How many did I create? Page 19 is almost finished at the time of this comment. How many I *PLAN* to write, I don’t know. Just like in “The 10 Doctors”, I don’t have a set number decided on. It’ll go until the story’s over. Hopefully not 247 pages. Fewer than 100 would be much better for me.
Likewise, “House of Paulus” isn’t decided on. There are currently 44 strips drawn and ready to post, but how long it will go I don’t know. “House of Paulus” is also more like YAFGC in that it has a storyarc that will end, but the comic can just go on and on. So don’t count on it ever ending, though I may take a break from it for a while when the “Paulus Takes a Bride” story is done.
You’re not annoying me. But I’m not going to give out spoiler info about my stories just because you asked. Also, screaming isnt’ much of a threat to me since I can’t hear you from where I am. So screech all you like. The story will return to the 5th Doctor and Nyssa when it’s right for the story to do so.

  39. Strukos

The first two seasons of FK are available on Hulu, free and in really good quality. I am guessing the next 3 to 4 panels will be in the past and resolve 5’s involvement, while we will then be in the 90’s and 8 and Nick will meet. Wonder which other Doctors will be used in which time periods ????

  40. Countess

Strukos, that’s an interesting thought about Nick and the Doctor meeting at different time periods. If that’s the case, and Nick knows that it’s the same person each time, he might expect some new regeneration that he hasn’t met yet. However, I suspect that Rich is going to try to keep it “simple” this time and have only two versions of the Doctor!

Incidentally, where I live (where, ironically, the show is set), FK isn’t available on Hulu or YouTube for “copyright reasons”.

  41. violinvictory

I’m not asking for spoilers. I want to discover the story for myself, as it unfolds.I didn’t intend to threaten you with “screaming bloody murder”–that’s just my general reaction whenever the Fifth Doctor is in trouble or his life is threatened (because he’s my favorite Doctor) in any story–it was NOT directed at you. I remember crying while watching a scene from Resurrection of the Daleks, when the Doctor was having his mind scanned (or something, I can’t describe it well)–I wanted to rescue him! That scene is torture to me, with the Doctor in pain. I hated feeling so helpless. I was calling out “Doctor, Doctor” and I couldn’t do anything about it. Probably one of his most vulnerable scenes of all time (along with Midnight, which scarred me to death). I can’t think of another Doctor who could pull off a scene what Peter Davison (other than Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, especially Tennent–remember Midnight?).

  42. violinvictory

Correct that last sentence: “I can’t think of another Doctor who could pull off a scene like what Peter Davison did (other than maybe Christopher Eccleston, and especially David Tennant–remember Midnight? If that story was done with the Fifth Doctor, he would be in worst shape).

  43. thanatos

It occurs to me – which Master? Delgado? Ainley? Pratt? Jacobi? Surely not Simm or Roberts!?!?!? The TCE wasn’t their style at all.

  44. Ch1ps

YES, let’s head to the inevitable reunion! :-D I love this kind of anticipation.

  45. Metacrisis

I’m really liking the face the Doctor pulls in the last panel.

  46. Amayirot Akago

Really liking the comic so far, even if I’ve never seen Forever Knight. In fact, I might be inclined to look it up sometime now…

  47. Grimley Fieendish

Is Dr. Lambert developing some sort of anti-vampire weapon, for Nick to use, or is it to use against Nick, if anything goes wrong…?
(The British vampire series Ultraviolet, had special “anti-leech” explosive bullets, made out of carbon fibre, with a concentrated garlic extract in gel form inside, to use against “leeches”, if a Code 5 alert happened…).

  48. Rich

    Grimley Fieendish:
Nat is trying to help Nick become Human again.

  49. The Cat Who Walks Alone

Damn, that’s a thought. The Doctor facing off against a group of Code 5s… I remember that show! I was always gutted that there was never a second series.

  50. mmm122

    Classic Nat.

  51. violinvictory

Just a question–how long does it take you to draw one panel?

  52. violinvictory

and by panel, I mean a full sheet. Just to be clear on my wording.

  53. Joey Turks

It’s Sunday night, July 12, and I’m seeing a House of Paulus panel here instead of Forever Janette. It’s probably just a messed up link but I thought I’d let you know.

  54. Rich

    violinvictory:
It depends on the content. If there’s a lot of people or details like a crowd scene, then it can take a little while. If it’s just two people talking, it’s faster, and if I have to do a lot of shading like in the Nick/LaCroix sequence, it can take HOURS!
I’ve never really timed myself. But I’d say about an hour generally.

Joey Turks: Thanks! I fixed it.

  55. Joey Turks

Thanks Rich. I’m enjoying this one as much as I enjoyed the 10 Doctors, but maybe that’s because I remember FK and loved the series.
