wouldn’t want to be on her bad side

  2. pappy h

Rich, I’ve been reading Paulus since TDD finished and thought it only right and proper that I go back and read it from the start. Really enjoying the story and just love your sense of humour which really comes across on the page. Many thanks for sharing your talent with us all.

  3. Rich

lord kron: No, that’s a bad place.

pappy h: Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying it!

  4. Romanadvoratrelundar

Same with me, pappy h! I started out just reading the Ten Doctors, then I went back to read Paulus from the start.. and I must say, I LOVE it! ^_^

  5. Makkabee

Woo hoo, an amazonian gladiator! This keeps getting more and more fun.

  6. Metacrisis

so now a gladiatrix. who will the fourth be?

  7. garnerhaines

    Happy Canada Day!

  8. Os

Geez, who was man enough to hold Midna as a slave? I’d hate to see the housemaster of her previous “employer…”

Incidentally, will Biggus Dickus be making an appearance in this story? (Just joking…)

    Cheers,
    Os.

  9. Krave

Os: It’s been established that they all were slaves of Paulus, they were a ‘Four Amigos’ kind of group who helped him out of trouble a lot, and that he freed them at the same time, or very close together. Maybe he used her as a bodyguard?

  10. herk

I already love Midna ( I wonder if she’d get along with Arachne – now that’s a terrifying thought)

  11. Jim

Wow… Midna’s really bulked up since the end of Twilight Princess. (Sorry, I had to make that joke)

  12. Rich

Os: Midna was a trouble slave. She was forever escaping and being recaptured during most of her servitude, being passed from owner to owner. She was just about to be executed when she was rescued (or stolen) by Paulus via Demetrios. It was Paulus’ level headedness, his kindness and his fairness that eventually won her over to accept her lot. She became a famous and very successful gladiator. Paulus freed her along with her friends when they actually saved his life and now she owns and runs her own gladiator training school.
Er… no. No Biggus Dickus. It’s a joke name. There is no such person. It’s like Nausius Maximus or Sillius Soddus.

    Jim: ? What’s “Twilight Princess”?

  13. Jim

Rich: Twilight Princess is a game in the Legend of Zelda series. In it, Link has to help Midna, a woman from a parallel world that exists in perpetual twilight, save her world and stop a psychotic dictator from wreaking havoc on both the worlds of light and darkness.

    Hope this helps.

  14. WalksInEternity

Gladiators Ready! Does Midna fight with those giant cotton buds? ;)

  15. Rich

Heheheh… they’re Roman gladiators. Not whimpy AMERICAN Gladiators.

  16. The Creeping Spleen

    Is Midna single? ;)

  17. searingdestiny

    cool your really talented! (:

um rich i want to ask you something…

this may sound stupid but I like to write and i was wondering if you would read something of mine and tell me what you think…

i would really like your point of view…

    if you don’t I understand entirely (:

(ps Im a girl) sorry my name doesn’t say much but i am a girl (:

sorry again and please think about it (:

  18. Rich

    searingdestiny, the girl:
I can read it if you like, but I’m not much of a writing critic. Where can I look at it?

  19. Vulpis

Hmmm. Very…Amazonian there (hope she wasn’t an archer….)

Meanwhile, looking at your other comic…Halfling Tremors. *facepalm* Oy vey.

  20. Rich

Vulpis: No, she wasn’t an archer. And not an Amazon, either. She’s a Gaul!

  21. WhoRU?

Man talk about pumping up Paulus entrouge and security. ..

  22. LC

    A Gaul eh?

Not from a certain village who hosted other famous Gauls in Julius C’s time? ;)

  23. Rich

LC: Keep in mind that FVLMINATA is set a good 200+years after Julius C’s time. By the time of Paulus, Gaul is pretty much all conquered out. Midna’s village was one of the last holdouts and most of that area is now very Roman.

  24. herk

@ Rich – well one of the last holdouts would fit – LC is talking about the Asterix comics (if I’m not mistaken). They’re quite famous here in Europe but from your reaction I’m not sure if you know about them (or if anyone over the pond really does)
For a bit of info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix

  25. WalksInEternity

@Herk: Asterix was set just after the Roman conquest of Gaul – around 58-50 BC historically (wikipedia says Asterix was set in 50BC, but take that with a pinch of salt), whilst the House of Paulus strip is set some time after 79A.D. (Rich said The Pompeii disaster is some time in Paulus’ past page xxiv), with Versuvius erupting 79AD.
She may be a descendant of Asterix, but we’ll have to wait until we see if she has a moustache or not ;)

  26. herk

@WalksInEternity: Rich already told that to LC, I just wanted to be the wise guy who explained LC’s reference – I don’t believe it.
But I love the descendant theory, although I’m only waiting for the typical round nose, the woman usually didn’t grow moustaches – they’re not dwarves after all ;)

  27. WalksInEternity

I have seen the odd non-dwarf woman with a ‘tache. They try to bleach them or use electrolysis

  28. LC

    @Rich
Herk has it – I was referring to Asterix the Gaul.
I didn’t realise the comics weren’t well knwon there :(

  29. Hilary

LC: They definitely are known, especially in Quebec; it still doesn’t make the timelines match up with this comic, though. :D

  30. LC

    @Hillary
I would have expected Quebec to have them. ;)

I did know of the time difference. It’s good manners to check on the background of someones story, so I followed the FVLMINATA link for the basic information.

AD 248 would have been during one of the Emperors crisis periods with either Phillipus or Decius (IIRC) and definetly not Julie C, hence why I mentioned Julie C in my original comment, to distinguish that I wasn’t saying Paulus was in ~ 50 BC, but that there were certain other famous Gauls from a certain village who made life miserable for the Romans in that period and prehaps Midna was from there.

Though as per usual I was as clear as mud – but I didn’t want to overly post a clarification in the comments section due to the rules of ’single comment only – take discussions to the forum’. I’ll push my luck here to claify and hope I dont get smited.

  31. Rich

LC: Yeah, I knew what you were referring to. I had a couple of the comics in French as a kid. My original reply had details in it that indicated that I knew you mean the Asterix comics, but I pared it down for clarity.
Anyway, yes, Midna is from Gaul, she would have been one of the last hold outs against Rome (and retained her rebellious nature for most of the campaign). And while that may have been why the player wanted to play a Gaul in the first place, very little reference was made to the Asterix comics (exept in that most internet sites indicate that it’s actually a surprisingly good reference for historic Gaul in regards to costume and culture, etc) I tried to base all my Gaul research on historic references and what little the FVLMINATA RPG had to say on the subject.
