The 10 Doctors – Page 239

All this saying goodbye is becoming a little much for the 9th Doctor. He goes to leave with Rose, but when stopped by the 4th and then the 8th Doctor, he finally just has to get himself out of there.

Discussion (106) ¬

  1. Lee

Poor Nine! At least he has Rose…
    Awesome work as ever Rich!

  2. Lukee

Brilliant work. That’s just how nine would react to the sudden loss.

  3. lore

awww, poor 9. its just too much for him :/

  4. Mozz

Brilliant, moving and completely unexpected. Fantastic work sir. I’m going to miss this strip.

  5. Stressfactor

Nine could console himself that they’re not *really* gone. After all, they’re all still him and they’re all there in his mind…..

Unless, of course, he’s talking about the Time Lords on Gallifrey and Leela and her children in which case…. yeah, they’re gone.

But remember, as Two said of remembering family: “Oh yes I can, when I want to. And that’s the point, really. I have to really want to – to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they sleep in my mind and I forget.”

  6. Sunny

    Awww!!! Poor Nine!

  7. Stacey

    Aww *hugs 9*

  8. Chiscringle

Nine has a boatload of willpower not to drag one of his other selves into the TARDIS and run away with them. And Ten not to just fix it.
There’s still the Monk to worry about. He’s loose and Eight will be back on Gallifrey soon.

  9. captain loconut

    awwwww
    so sad.
i love roses cheeky little “good bye rose”
    very her
it is very nice to see a nine who is not a great big wall of ‘don’t talk to me’
i am really glad he is able to let his feelings out, you don’t really see him have a big cry and some people would say that that is in his character not to cry but you go though a big thing like losing your entire people and you do get a little emotional and you need to cry no matter who you are.
thanks for seeing that and expressing it in your comic

  10. Lewis

    Great page!

  11. Mass

FAN-TAS-TIC! page. I love how youve done the console room in 9’s TARDIS

  12. Sarlania

What a lovely page Rich! But why is Rose saying “Goodbye. Rose”?

  13. MythicFox

Those last three panels just break my heart. If you were to use the soundtrack from the new series to score this, that last bit would require “This is Gallifrey, Our Childhood, Our Home” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bvHs0a74pM) to play in the background.

  14. Metacrisis

Aww! I would hug nine, but I didn’t really like him…I like him more in your comic than I did in the show…

  15. Chryse

    Wow. Tingles. Nuff said.

  16. Pete

Sarlania, this is a very old joke. George Burns and Gracie Allen ued to end each show with the following:

    George : “Say goodnight, Gracie”
    Gracie : “Goodnight, Gracie”

It was probably old even then.

  17. Stormwolf

    Aw, Nine! Poor thing. :(

  18. PhantomDrummer

I want to give Nine a big hug too, after seeing that last panel =(

  19. Matelot

    Poor Nine

  20. Stacey

    Loved the “goodbye, Rose” line

  21. M'reen

    *sniff* poor 9
It’s nice of the others to try and talk to him – but it’s understandable his incapacity to do so

  22. kittystitcher

I almost cried at this page, Rich! Poor 4 and 8, they have no idea why 9 did that, lol. Maybe 10 will clarify a bit, at least tell them it wasn’t their fault 9 did that…?

Great page, a real heart string-tugger, *sniffle*

  23. LMCR

9 has the worst survivors guilt.

  24. Merlin McCarley

Ah, if only we had gotten ONE and only one goodbye from Rose.

  25. Lela

Ah. Poor 9! It makes me so sad and 4 and 8 have no idea why he acts the way he does toward them. :(
    Great page as always.

  26. The1Russter

Nine’s reaction tells me that it was Eight’s responsibility for destroying Gallifrey in order to destroy the Daleks and protect the universe from the Daleks acquiring all of Time Lord knowledge and technology. I feel bad for Nine and Eight. Nine for his inability to deal with what he had to do and his inability to forgive himself. Eight for what he will have to do and not understanding Nine’s reaction. Ten seems to have finally come to terms with his actions as Eight as we have seen in earlier pages. Nine could use a therapist, but really all he needs is ROSE. She pulled him, somewhat reluctantly, out of his funk. Rose was the best companion for Nine. It was her presence that made Nine become such a nice chap with more of a sense of fun and love for life when he became Ten.

  27. Ken

Well, guess there’ll be no love for 8 from 9.

  28. dalektaliban

    * sad violin music que *

  29. Percy

Aw, that’s sad. I suppose, if you think about it, Nine has been avoiding the rest during this comic, with his flitting around in Drax’s TARDIS and all. Poor Eight, though! He’s all “What did I do?” He’s the only one who wasn’t told about Gallifrey’s imminent destruction, yes?

  30. korafrax

Awwwww poor Nine. I wished we could have seen more than one season of him, but Richs comic has made up for it. So sad.

  31. Cleverest Name

MythicFox: I’ve been doing that! Trying to match the music to the comic! Playing “Gallifrey” over this, I nearly cried.

I love your drawings of Nine’s face, and like others have said, I like him better in the comic than in the show. But I expected the end to be a sentimental conversation between Ten, Nine, and possibly Eight, as Five and Ten skimmed upon at the very end of “Time Crash”.

    Wonderful as always!

  32. Cleverest Name

By the way, I am of the opinion that the destruction of Gallifrey is a conspiracy. The Time Lords are still out there…

  33. Lord President Lundar

    “Say goodbye, Rose.” “Goodbye Rose!”
That is just like her. :-)

  34. Shrammy

I haven’t had reason to comment yet, although I’ve been reading this and loving it ever since I found it… but this was completely and utterly heartbreaking. It’s exactly how Nine would react too- no goodbyes, just leaving without a backward glance, always running from the reminder. And this showed that conflict perfectly.

Plus, Rose was so completely herself right there…. not asking any questions, just giving him the hug that we all want to wrap him in! (And, of course, the “Goodbye, Rose” bit, because she WOULD say that!)

Absolutely beautiful… and that said, I’m going to go off in a corner and listen to Doomsday and Gallifrey (nice suggestion, it DOES fit this perfectly!) and cry a bit for Nine’s sake..

  35. Temothy

poor 9! and, in a way, poor 8! he’s got no clue… and, in a weird sense, poor 10! having to re-live the time war TWICE after the fact (from his perspective) must be a special kind of hell for him. but most of all, poor 9. it’s still so raw for him when the comic starts, and now, just whoa. and i’ve lost my point somewhere along the way. :)

  36. Parn

    Awwww….sooo emotional , so cute , so real ….
you’ve done this page brilliantly Rich!

  37. DoctorParadox

Yea I feel so bad for nine, its like he is losing the timelords and his planet all over again and its really hitting him hard. Great job Rich! You really captured his inner pain.

  38. herk

    :’(

I had to grin at “Goodbye Rose.”
And then you do that. Poor, poor Nine.

  39. Lisa

Aww, poor Nine! *wrenches Rose out of his arms and hugs him* Mine!

  40. Koki

Am I the only one who feels more sorry for eight than for nine? XD He tries to be friendly, gets a door slammed in his face without so much as a goodbye and is probaly shocked and bewildered why Nine would turn his back on him like that!
    My reactions:
Panel2 – Hehe =) Goodbye Rose! I always did like Rose’s sense of humor
panel 6 and 7: Oooooh! Eight just got Blanked! XD aw the poor guy was just being friendly..!
Panel 8: Aww…now I feel bad for Nine too =’(

  41. violet

Yeah, poor Nine… I was wondering that he held up a little bit too well through all of this. That exit is so in character for him: trying to smile and act like it’s no big deal, while really he just wants to make it quick because he just can’t stand it any longer.

Thanks Rich for incorporating that hug / minor break down they cut from the end of “Dalek”. (presumably because it made the Doc look too weak)

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDARFSPYOhY
(this happened right after the Dalek blew itself up; blink and you miss it)

  42. Cleverest Name

I hope one of the remaining Doctors walks in and tries to comfort Nine.

  43. Soreye

    :`(
When Nine cries, we all cry.

  44. Chris

:) Lovely comic. Nine is beautifully rendered in Panel 5, Rose’s joke is cute (thank you, Gracie Allen!) and the last panel is so sad. Poor Nine and his survivor’s guilt/PTSD. Luckily he’s got a shoulder to cry on to help him through this.

korafrax, I also wish we could’ve seen at least two seasons with Nine — I loved Christopher Eccleston’s performance, and his chemistry with Billie Piper.

  45. Kimberly

Wooooo! Nine has issues. Understandably so, but issues nonetheless.

  46. Bill M.

Well, I don’t normally break down comics like this, but here it goes…

Panel 2: Isn’t she too young to get that joke, much less give that response?
Panel 5: Oooh, ominous, even for 9.
Panels 6 & 7: Ouch, cold shoulder. I know why though. 9’s suffered the hard choices, and while he’s gotten a reprieve during this webcomic, he’s alone, he’s the last, and he knows that it was his decisions during the time war that caused that. Also, I like 4 standing by 8, since 8 was the first Doctor since 4 that brought back the nostalgia feeling I had for Doctor Who. 4 was my first Doctor, I actually liked K-9 and Adric (I was young at the time, liked robots and math).
Panel 8: There are so many songs going through my head thinking about that panel… Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again”, Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”, and a few others…

  47. Tezzle

D: Awww, poor emo Doctor. XD

  48. Tarot

    I <3 Nine. Nicely written.

  49. Jim

The1Russter: In the Doctor Who comic series “The Forgotten”, a flashback to one of Eight’s adventures reveals that he is the one responsible for initiating the events that led to the destruction of Gallifrey. He used the “Great Key” to lock the Medusa Cascade and remove his world and the Daleks from time and space.

  50. TeenageMage

@Violet: That’s so short, it almost looks more like a joke on one of the actors’ parts rather than a deleted scene….(where did that come from, anyway? Unless I’ve missed something, they don’t have the deleted scenes and bloopers on the Season 1 set for some reason).
@Bill M:That’s such an old joke, you hardly have to have heard the original to get it. I mean, I got it and I’ve never heard the original, I just assumed it was one of those floating jokes. Besides, they ARE time travelers, remember?

Awwww….that’s sad. And sweet. Mostly sad. Poor Eight, you can’t even see his expression and he looks taken aback.

  51. CG

i love how 4 finally gives someone except himself credit… he does care after all.

  52. Long Time Reader

@ Jim: Alas, unless it is shown or mentioned directly on TV, it isn’t canon. All spin-off material encompassing comics, novels, direct-to-video productions, Big Finish and BBV Audios, post production interviews with writers and actors and do not have any impact upon the (TV) Whoniverse, and is only fanfiction, no matter how polished, and so should not be taken as fact.

  53. violet

    @TeenageMage:
As far as I’ve heard, there were a few deleted scenes in S1, but somehow the BBC lost the tapes. This little snippet survived because it was shown on some other kid’s show during an interview or review (hence Billy Piper talking over it).
I’ve yet to read the shooting script of the episode, but I it doesn’t seem like a joke to me. Much to angsty for that.

  54. itzWicks

Of all the pages you’ve put together, this one was the most emotional for me. It resonated in a way that the others, while still brilliantly done, just pushed me over the edge. Well done, indeed.

Now a point of clarification: is it just me assuming this, or didn’t the events of the Last Great Time War culminated in Eight sacrificing himself in some grandiose manner resulting in the 9th Doctor? It is implied in “Rose” that the regeneration was very recently done, and in “Dalek” the Doctor was responsible for pulling the ultimate trigger, wiping out Dalek and Time Lords alike. Methinks the 8th Doctor is going to be one that ends the conflict once and for all, and is changed forever, both physically and emotionally. While pursuing the Autons back to Earth, the 9th Doctor takes stock of his new iteration.

In any event, The Ten Doctors will go down as epic web comic making, loved by so many fans. Continued thanks for all of your efforts, Rich.

  55. carol

    Poor 9. :(

  56. JustAWanderer

About Rose being too young for the “Say goodnight, Gracie” joke: We know that Nine and Rose had other adventures besides what we saw on the show. Maybe they went back and met Burns and Allen at some point.
About Eight: I’ve forgotten what I was going to say about Eight. Never mind.
Oh, that’s right, it just came back to me: The others have had time to fill him in. I have to wonder how much they told him. (Maybe they didn’t want to bring him down during the party.)
itzWicks: I think most people assume that the Eighth Doctor was the one who fought in (and ended) the Time War.

  57. phantom_fighter

:( i feel so bad for 9 *sniff*

  58. scionofgrace

Oh, Nine! Four doesn’t often say thank you (of course, he’d be more likely to say it to himself), so it just makes it more heartbreaking that Nine rebuffs him.

  59. Whatsit

You want a soundtrack for this how about….

    Carry on, my wayward son
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
    Don’t you cry no more……

  60. 494alex

    Poor 8… so naive…

  61. Long Time Reader

Soundtrack? The Only Ones; Another Girl, Another Planet
    I always flirt with death,
I look cute but I don’t care about it,
    I can face your threats,
and can stand up straight and tall and shout about it!

  62. violet

It’s kinda fitting that it would be 4 and 8 who get rebuffed by 9… After all, 4 could have prevented the war if he’d just followed his orders. But… “I couldn’t… I wouldn’t… Oh Rose, they’re all dead.” Poor Doctor, not only responsible for the ultimate ending but, by omission, also for the beginning of the war. I’m not saying that 4 made the wrong decision. Just that it’s more than just survivor guilt, no matter if the destruction of Gallifrey was an accident that resulted from trying to destroy the Dalek fleet, or an accepted sacrifice.

    @Whatsit: Good choice
I love “this is Gallifrey” as a beautiful piece of music, but it actually sounds to uplifting and hopeful for this scene. My personal theme song for Nine is “Exile” by Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts

I feel a shadow passing over me
    That could stay forever more
Like a wave I’m breaking far at sea
There’s no one to hear the roar

And the days are drifting into seasons
They’re the hardest I have known
A million spaces in the Earth to fill
And here’s a generation waiting still
We’ve got year after year to kill

    But there’s no going home
    No going home…

  63. Sean

HE thinks he’s got it hard? At least he gets to forget all this now. Ten still gets all the memories.

I actually hope Ten runs in after him to say a proper goodbye and really speak to him about all that happened.

Ten: Even as you forget this, I want you to remember. I want you to always remember this… You, all the way up until you regenerate, and even afterwards, you, Doctor, will always be…fantastic.

    Seriously. He should do that.

  64. warhols_darling_queen

that last panel actually made me well up with tears, good job Rich

  65. Arianna_BadWolf

:( it makes me sad that 10 didn’t say anything, but I understand what he was doing, as he wouldn’t have Rose if he were to stop it. I suppose it all depends on what you are willing to give up.

  66. DennyWilson

But at the end of the day 10 will only remember from his POV… and 9 won’t remember ihis breakdown when time is righted – unless 10 will get in inrush of memories once time is righted and remember everything from his younger selfs that they forgot.

This timely-wimmy stuff gives me a headache.

  67. Lizardlicks

Oh! That’s were that dagger went… In my gut! What a silly place for it.

  68. Scarecrow

On a slightly different note, I’m having a hard time imagining the Fourth Doctor using the word “hey”.

  69. Metacrisis

Just a thought about the ‘goodbye rose’ joke…
I’d never heard of where it came from, but I’ve used something like that before…it’s possible to reference something without knowing the source, or even knowing it’s a reference. It is just as easy to simply make a joke out of taking something literally.

  70. Ishara

Violet wrote: Thanks Rich for incorporating that hug / minor break down they cut from the end of “Dalek”. (presumably because it made the Doc look too weak)

OMG, I never saw that deleted scene before! Gives me the shivers. They shouldn’t have left that out!

Awsome last panel, Rich, took me right by surprise!

  71. lunalovegoddess

About Rose being too young for the “Say goodnight, Gracie” joke:
I was born in the late 70’s. My generation would get it; my cousin and his expectant wife are naming their daughter Gracie. So this is still within the realm of possibility, for entertainment is true immortality.

Rich, I love this comic. You obviously love and appreciate classic Who, and it really shines through your work.

  72. Paul

I was born in the mid 70s myself, and I certainly got the reference! :-)

  73. Sean

It’s ironic, because Gracie Allen never ever said, “Goodnight, Gracie.” It’s something she WOULD’VE said, but she never actually did. It may have been inspired by Dan Rowan and Dick Martin:

    “Say goodnight, Dick.”
    “Goodnight, Dick!”

  74. li'l hobbit

    9!!!! DON’T CRY!!!! *sob*

  75. Maki P

Poor 9, the one who’s broken and alone (10 is the lonely sad one, BTW).
And “cling to that faith. You’re going to need it” Wonderful line, and so sad…..
On the subject of the “Say Goodbye Rose”: I’m about Rose’s age (I was born in 1987 like her) and I’ve always known that stupid joke. Is that sort of things you know even if you don’t dont where do they came from. Like “you know of course this means war” I managed to find out is Groucho Marx’s but I still don’t know where does it come from exactly.

Sorry, I’m taking an English writting course, and I’m trying to write properly. Thank you.

  77. Maki P

Also: “This is my world, you’re just living in it”
I can’t think on anything else right now.

  78. Who am I?

poor 9?Poor 8 is more like it!He has no idea why he was treated like that and when he does understand it will crush him.

  79. Ccosmo Smith

    ah, that is good, wow

  80. Me, myself

Poor 8! He was so full of hope and enthusiasm and the Time War is just going to destroy him.

On the subject of soundtracks: Behind Blue Eyes, by the Who

But my dreams, they aren’t as empty
As my conscience seems to be
    I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance that’s never free

  81. M'reen

Ah, but WhoamI, when 8 does understand, and it crushes him, he will be 9. They are the same man, before and after, so deal with the same heartache that made one the other.

  82. Serosis

Regarding the too young to get the “Goodnight, (your name here)” joke.

I knew that joke and I never knew where it originated till now, I thought it was more of a sarcastic little joke that most everyone knew.

  83. Serosis

    I have to double post:

You know, out of all the doctors I believe you got 4 down the best in the looks department.

  84. Jonn Wolfe

Damn… I soooo wanted Nine to deck Eight.

At any rate, I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  85. gorramKayna

Me, myself: I was acutually htinking on making a fanvid for 9 to that exact song. Though, it will always be the themesong for Malcolm Reeynolds for me.

  86. Who Am I?

best fanvid for 9 is on youtube.Look up Dr. Who Magic man(by Heart)

  87. Athena

People born in the mid 90’s get the joke, but thanks for those interesting facts about where it started.

Thanks Rich for showing us the sad and yet truthful moment at the end of this page that shows us that not even the doctor can come out of traumatic experiences unscathed. Great comic! Keep up the great work with your projects of the future!

  88. spufidoo

Who says Eight destroyed Gallifrey? It could have been Nine. But then again, who knows, who cares?

  89. andrew Pittaway

poor 9 and poor 8 for what is to come

  90. Fangarius

Actually, I think a better theme here would be ‘Legacy’ by the Pet Shop Boys, for both Nine and Ten. @andrew: I think that’s why this departure’s so hard for Nine, since he knows the outcome. Same with the other Doctors for being glad none of the Companions Lost were involved in this Time Convergence. Because they knew what would happen to them.

Actually, the joke came from George Burns if I’m not mistaken, when he used to say, “Say Goodnight, Gracie.” and Grace would say, “Goodnight, Gracie.”

Still a great comic. Shame it’ll end soon, but hopefully it’ll lead to some new beginnings.. perhaps.

  91. Dr. Bunsen

Gosh, that was an uncomfortable page. Well done Rich!

  92. Koki

On the topic of “Goodnight Rose” – I’m supposedly too young to know that joke too, but I still got it – it’s a pretty obvious joke when you think about it, wherever it originally came from doesn’t matter =P I didn’t realise it was a reference to anything either – I mean it’s been used so many times over the years… *shrug*

On the topic of background soundtrack:
This is Gallerfrey is a beautiful piece that would go with this well. And as for it being too uplifting, you could always do a more sudued, sorrowful variation on the same tune. (I mean just look how many times they’ve varied ‘The Doctor’s Theme’ to suit different moods – mysterious, peaceful, sinister (think of the spine-chilling variation in Turn Left!) and I’m sure they’ve used a sorrowful variation of The Doctor’s Theme too – And that could easily be applied to the soundtrack “This is Gallifrey” =D
So yeah (sorry for the long explaination, but) “This is Gallifrey” – or variation on it, would be perfect for the last panel!

  93. Tangerine

    Amazing work, poor old Nine.

  94. Doctor Who lover!!!!!

aww( crys) poor nine. I really don’t want to ask about ten when he says good bye or it’s most likely he’ll be the last person there. Poor nine and ten. By the way Rich great job! ;]

  95. ericinwisconsin

I guess 9 lives by the axiom “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” :D

I read an interesting Who fanfic somewhere in which 10 and 4 met. 10 was very angry with 4 over the whole “Genesis of the Daleks” thing. Seethingly angry. I thought it worked pretty well and I guess that’s how 9 feels here.

    Great page, Rich!

  96. The Architect TimeLord

    @Maki P
The line “you know of course this means war” is from Duck Soup, a Marx Brothers 1933 film.
Insanly funny, but the best i think is Night at the Opera, where at a certen point they manage to squize 20something people in a very small cruiser cabin, rather like the tardis…

  97. Long Time Reader

@The Architect TimeLord: You mean it wasn’t Bugs Bunny? (j/k)

  98. korafrax

Rich, you managed to make a page where everytime I look at it it’s still sad.

  99. billhedrick

Music: I am hearing the sad walk away music from “The Incredible Hulk” TV show, when Bill Bixby was hitchhiking away at the end of the episode.

  100. Soreye

This is really sweet. :) I love Eight’s body language when the doors are slammed in his face.

    Great job…

    100TH COMMENT!

  101. violet

It just occurred to me that Rose has been waiting for something like this to happen. Back when they leave Gallifrey, she asks him if he’s going to be okay, but he still brushes it off. Perhaps because they were not yet among themselves.
I’m imagining zero surprise at his breakdown once the doors are closed. She knows her Doctor very well. Bless her.

  102. Maki P

The Architect TimeLord: Thanx, do you happened to know where “This is my world, you’re just living in it” comes from?

  103. ladykempton

I am a first time commentator I found this comic a few weeks ago and laughed out loud when I read it I am a huge Two, Seven and Ace , Ten fan I thought the size of Two and Seven was very funny I always thought that those two would get on! Ace was great. Are you going to do any more Doctor Who strips with only one Doctor in the story I would love a Second Doctor comic or even a Seventh Doctor comic I look forward to reading the next instulment Hurry Please!!!!!!

  104. ericinwisconsin

ladykempton, don’t try to rush Rich. He tells us he has something called “a life” that often takes him away from the comic. We have all offered to remove this troublesome “life” thing of which he speaks, so that he can work 24/7 on the strip, with occasional bathroom breaks and 20-minute breaks for naps, but he insists that “life” is important, so we let him live it.

Those of us who have no life of which to speak sit here with baited breath, awaiting new pages. Trust me, it’s worth the wait. :D

  105. Jonn Wolfe

To coin a phrase: “You Can’t Rush Art.”

  106. Catelly

    LOL
    “Say goodbye Rose!”
    “Goodbye. Rose.”

    very sad for #9
