The 10 Doctors – Page 216

The Doctor learns that he has been acting as the champion of the Black Guardian. When he demands an explanation, the two Guardians begin a description of the story so far, starting with the beginning of the universe.

  1. Lewis

    Ooooh, this looks interesting!

  2. tbdanny

Nicely done! I can’t help shaking the feeling that the end of this story is a fair way off yet. Looking forward to what comes nexe.

  3. Mosuke

The Black Guardian’s evil look in panel four is great.

[settles in for a good story with some popcorn]

  4. DeathlySerenity

    Oo second comment?

And WOW. The art in this comic just gets better and better, I’m gripped on the edge of my seat with the storyline too!!

  5. DeathlySerenity

    Damnnn XD

  6. Gallifrey

    Gripping!
And I love the comment about the white daleks! Made my day!

  7. Athena

    and so the plot thickens…
    Great page, Rich!

  8. ChibiDalek

I want those figures of all the characters, they look like something the celestial toymaker would have

  9. datechguy

It’s an interesting plot twist but I’ve never cared for the moral ambiguity business, it doesn’t seem consistent with the guardians actions in the episodes leading to “Enlightenment”. I suspect the doctor won’t care for it either.

  10. Kat Klingon

Yes, Ten has had just about enough those Guardians should know better but of course they overlook the obvious because ‘they’ are ‘all-powerful.’ I’m looking forward to a lovely twisting of their intentions by Ten. If we can’t leave him happy let’s hope he at least gets satisfaction.

  11. Mike

This just keeps getting more and more interesting. Glad to see 10 is getting something to do after being Dalek-fied for about 70 pages.

  12. Isi

…and i just lost the game on panel 5.

  13. Robotech_Master

And of course the guardians are wrong. The universe MUST remain balanced between order and chaos or it will not continue to be the universe.

  14. WallsInEternity

Don’t smash Davros like that! He’s a Limited Edition collectable!

  15. dalektaliban

and he wasd removed from his packaging!!!!!

  16. M'reen

I love this – see, this is the sort of stuff I thought they were going to do in ‘Impossible Planet’ but instead of the Doctor facing a choice between a universe without a Black Guardian, and therefore without a White Guardian, they gave us a cheesy alien giant with horns.

*feeling very vindicated that someone out there ‘got it right’ -ie wrote a story expressing a theory I’ve always wanted explored*
    :D

  17. Phoenix

Settles back with chocs on the comfy sofa to enjoy the story =)

  18. DeathlySerenity

@ WallsInEternity LOL XD Well done! You’ve made me chuckle =]

  19. kittystitcher

M’reen – Aww, I liked Impossible Planet, it was one of my favorites! Though this comic certainly puts it to shame.

Anyway…Rich, is this a sneaky ploy to extend the life of the comic? Have all-powerful beings natter on about why they exsist? I hope that the Doctor does something about this…we all know he doesn’t like to be pushed, can he and will he push back against Guardians?!!?

Looking forward to the next page!!!

  20. UnbekanntesPferd

@kittystitcher: do you even have to ask? He’s the Doctor, of course he’ll push back. Don’t know if it will do him much good, though. I mean, whether his actions help one of the Guardians or not, he’ll still keep doing what he thinks is right… probably.
Still no idea where this is going to end up and it’s a great feeling :D

  21. Ammy

Love the Black Guardian’s face in panel 4, I was just worried that 10’s eyebrow wouldn’t make it back down again…

  22. plurgid

this is so good. man. so good.

  23. Evil Midnight Lurker

…That’s a nice bit of completely meaningless and wrong gibberish they’re spouting. :) Call ‘em on it, Ten!

  24. Lord President Lundar

It also explains the emergency temporal shifts. The White Guardian gave them that power.

  25. Bitbucket

“I tend to its state of order and my sister to its state of chaos.”

    … Bloody h. It’s the Vorlon and the Shadows…

  26. LMCR

Could this mean that the Time War was a scam and that Galifrey survived?
Hey, I say it on You Tube.

  27. LMCR

I mean, I SAW it on You Tube! (sorry’bout the typo.)

  28. phantomfighter

Ohhh, *sits down on the sofa and gets comfy* “pass the popcorn please.”
    :D

  29. korafrax

I love how you can see the figurine of 10 falling over when 10 slammed down the Davros one.

  30. Elle

Wow, great page! I was thinking a few pages back at how little of a role the tenth doctor played in this comic. I’m glad to see he’s having a bigger role.

  31. Kat Klingon

Explanation starts with the beginning of the Universe, huh? Why do I get the sudden urge tio call the Black Guardian Fenric? I know Fenric was still in the Flask the Doctor trapped him in when the Black Guardian stories happened, but there could be a connection.

  32. Tangerine

    Well, well, well….
I can imagine some shouty 10th Doctor stuff happening soon.

  33. Lily Knotwise

Funny, I just finished an Astronomy assignment on what type of universe we live in… Cool stuff, I can’t wait to hear more about what the heck is going on here.

  34. WhoRU?

Oh oh, I sense a memory wipe.

  35. Jonn Wolfe

The Doctor is the Black Guardian’s champion…

    The irony here is stellar.

  36. Maki P

So, I’m gonna be honest and admit I have no idea what is going on, and I’m really looking forward for an explanation (I know it’s gonna be interesting).
BTW, 2 updates since my last visit! I wasn’t especting anything until Tuesday! Love it Rich!

  37. LOGOSXII

Hey this is getting all juicy n stuff…yup please pass the popcorn over here…the people in charge should really think about doing a whole range of new animated stuff ya know like all the missing episodes or animated versions of some of the audios or books or even a graphic novel or two. I mean you can’t redo the stuff ya know but they can animate it and make it accessible to a whole new generation.
This comic really puts a smile on my face when i read it mostly because of your knowledge of the whoniverse and like i said characterization and the art work is great! And hey all the rest of yous make it a bit more interestin….

  38. Helen

Sounds like both are evil and trying to use both Davros and the Doctor , I mean when search for the key to time was in play, didn’t the “white Guardian” reveal himself to be the black guardian? aren’t they one and the same but spilt?

  39. LOGOSXII

so he’s an agent of chaos n now he gets the story n the mission…but then hasn’t he been puttin things in order also?Maybe he gets to do a bit of both this time?

  40. Eugene

    Good work, Rich.

  41. KJack4314

Just out of curiosity, have you listened to the Big Finish Audio Key 2 Time, Destroyer of Delights?
Err… love the stip by the way. Check it every morning to see if it’s updated.

  42. korafrax

Now is all of the Doctors the black gaurdians champion or just 10? It seems a little unfair to have 10 champions agianst one, unless you use the quantum Doctor, but no one will ever beat him. And the 10 doctors have been really screwing up the timeline haven’t they? Makes sence for all of them to be chaos.

  43. Jim

M’reen: I don’t think the Beast was supposed to be an alien, rather an ethereal creature that exists outside our concept of reality.

  44. Koki

    Oooo…:o

  45. Doctor Who lover!!!!!

Go Ten get mad! Their meanies anyway. Great work Rich.

  46. Mitchell Craig

As the Guardians are about to discover, screwing around with the Doctor is NOT a good idea, even if you are an omiscient manifestation of reality.

  47. Rassilon001

    Amen to that, Mitchell Craig

  48. who am I

Perhaps they have both been using him and are now trying to get him to decide the fate of the universe. My bet is he’ll choose not to as he belives free will is more important.By the way Chibidalek…I do have the game and all those figures!(I hope that dosen’t make me a guardian!)

  49. WalksInEternity

who am I: Is your computer desk tidy or messy? Just so we know which Guardian you are ;)

  50. mrfranklin

@Lily Knotwise – …and what kind of universe did you choose? :) (I once had an astronomy prof put “Define the Universe, and give three examples” on an exam as a serious (if facetiously worded) question.)

  51. Bill M.

Wow, I missed a few updates, so I’m posting on the page I just caught up to.

    BEST. PLOT TWIST. EVER!

If I only learned one thing from the Key To Time season, it is this, the Black Guardian can disguise itself as anyone. If it lied, than the Doctor & Romana were just met by the wrong Guardian, but if it didn’t then it sent the Doctor & Romana on a quest to hunt down the one tool it needed to overthrow the White Guardian and eventually punished them by convincing the Logoplis people of the imminent destruction of the universe to create the CVEs.

One other thing, when the White-robed, Black-skinned Guardian appeared to Davros, he reminded me more of Captain Murphy from Sealab 2020/2021 (whichever you’re more familiar with).

  52. David J Rust

Rich, you are -without a doubt- a Doctor Who and Web Comic genius! I’ve been following this story as it’s unfolded since #6 and it’s only gotten better and better. With this recent addition of the Guardians I simply had to say how excellent the plot has gotten and how great your storytelling is!

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart (yep, sadly I still only seem to have one), for sharing this story with the rest of the world for free! How generous is that?!!

Rock on Rich, you really are one of the good guys!

    Yours,
    Dave

  53. Dalek Em

My thoughts hark back to “Journey’s End” when Davros is thwarted by Dalek Caan and the clone Doctor; perhaps the White Guardian engineered taht because she was mad at him for attempting the ultimate chaos, which is literal nothingness.

  54. Vulpis

I love the offhand comment about Dalek colors…

I forsee the Doc being ticked off about being used by *either* Guardian–he’s definitely the kind of person who’d know that the balance of order *and* chaos is what keeps things going–without chaos, the universe goes stagnant and dies. Without order to provide a framework to work off of, the change brought by chaos is meaningless, and the universe also fails to live. It’s the interplay between the two that keeps things going.

  55. kittyniciaian

This is feeling very Babylonian. I like it!

  56. ladyfox7oaks

The start of the Universe? ..(Sits back, gets popcorn and a drink..) This could take a while.

  57. Soreye

Oh, so were starting at *THE* beginning. Thats about 100 Trillion years worth of comic. Popcorn, anyone??? :)

  58. Scottimus Prime

Starting at the beginning of the Universe…I’m surprised nobody made the (apparently NOt-so-)obvious joke yet, about 4 in Destiny Of The Daleks reading his “History Of” book: “They got it wrong on the first page! *tsk* Why didn’t they ask somebody who was there?” :D

  59. who am I

Desk?My whole cabin is messy!I run a pirate crew and some of closest friends call me Palpentine.give yourself to the dark side…we have cookies!

  60. carol

Oooooooooooooo! This is getting good! :)

  61. Elliee Vaness

I just need to point this out. The guardians didn’t say anything about the beginning of the universe. Just that they came to guard the universe.

  62. Kat Klingon

    Elliee Vaness,
I got the ‘Beginning of the Universe thing from Rich’s synopisis just under the comic, last sentence. It’s Rich’s story if he said that, I’ll go with it.

  63. Elliee Vaness

Oh. *feels stupid now* (but I’ll get over it)

  64. Cosmo Smith

this would have made a brilliant double-page

  65. Ch1ps

    Things are getting interesting. :-)

  66. Hybrid

If you think about it, the Doctor is the perfect chaos piece, if you define chaos as being ” unpredictictable, totally random behaviour nevertheless generated by constant rules”. That’s him! It suits him perfectly! As before mentioned, he is one of the most powerful peices on the board, maybe because, although he is a chaos piece, he also has rules that define him and keep him stable, not killing in cold blood being one of them. He may be the Black Guardian’s favourite piece because he is not totally controllable like other pieces, being unpredictable, and I imagine this appeals to her as custodian of chaos.

  67. Antonius

So good Rich! Love this big picture stuff.

  68. Magic_and_Stars

Oh my giddy aunt! I just knew that the Black Guardian was going to upset the Doctor with this latest revelation–Time’s Champion has become an Agent of Chaos? I don’t really see this. The Doctor is a hero, and he arrives to save the day. Okay, so maybe he doesn’t always save it, and sometimes everybody dies, but he does what he can to keep things from getting worse. Like Aslan, he is not a tame lion! I also compare the Doctor to the wizards in Diane Duane’s The Young Wizards series–they are doing their best to slow down the heat-death of the universe, to prevent entropy from winning so quickly over life.

The Doctor was once the White Guardian’s pawn, and now the Black Guardian wants to do the same? Bad means to a good end may not always work, and they do have that moral ambiguity referred to earlier in the comments.

Ten’s going to have to come up with some of his patented fast-talking to get out of this. I now think that Gallifrey has not been blown up, but that all this is taking place in that same place where Four met the White Guardian, a place and time and outside of space and time. Not a dream, perhaps a mental landscape.

A clever story by a clever artist/storyteller, and lots of clever commenting, too. :)

  69. Rorschach

It’s quite a common theme to replace “Good vs. Evil” with “Law vs. Chaos” and to point out that complete order isn’t a good thing. Complete order is stagnation, whereas Nature (and perhaps life itself) is generally rather Chaotic.

One of the most famous uses of this idea would be by Michael Moorcock in the Elric of Melnibone and Hawkmoon novels.

Then there are such threats as the Cybermen or the Borg or a multitude of computers running their planet with complete logical order. These foes want peaceful homogenious order and are often defeated by an injection of a random virus, or human emotions. In other words a nice piece of unpredictable chaos.

  70. Sammy

    Oooh!

  71. Grimley Fieendish

Re: the last couple of posts
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons combined both “Good Vs Evil”, & “Law Vs Chaos” in their 1st edition to produce their Alignment system…
According to this system, for example, The Black & White Guardians are regarded as respectively Chaotic & Lawful Neutral (i.e they do not care about the concepts of Good or Evil, as they do not consider these concepts as absolutes, unlike Law & Chaos), Davros is classified as Lawful Evil, (though he would argue that he’s Lawful Good, in that he’s trying to bring order to the universe under his guidance), while the Master is Chaotic Evil…
The Doctor is Chaotic Good, under said system, while the Brigader would be counted as Lawful Good…
