The Dalek reminds the Doctor of times in his early life when his impulsiveness and lack of discipline got him into serious trouble.
The Doctor informs the Dalek that his goals and achievements outweigh his foibles.

Awesome page!
By the way, are those supposed to be the Rani and Drax in the background in panel four?
Wayhay! First comment! Great page Rich – good summation of the Doctor’s character and neat flashbacks. Oh, if only this scene was on the telly…
good to see the flashbacks – guessing that K’anpo is one of the doctor’s mentors along with Borrusa ?
Ah, this just keeps getting better! Fantastic page – so glad you’re back to regular uploading! I love all the Doctors here. ^^
Very great page, Rich. I love how you drew the young 1st Doctor, Master, with the Rani and I can’t tell (Drax?) in the background. I already thought the Doctor looked like a younger Hartnell, but coupled with those flashbacks it’s much more obvious. BRAVO!
Ooh, nice job there Rich. I especially liked frame 4 for its apt foreshadowing.
Funnily enough, Combo-Doctor has made a speech describing my very own mentality of the subject in the new series. Surely, the Doctor must lament for all the deaths he has been responsible for, but he’s certainly done far more good than evil. After all, he became the main character of the most awesome sci-fi ever!
Great job! ;D
This put me in mind of a humourous comic strip I found on the net. It was by an artist called Type 40. I can’t locate the site to provide a direct link, but did download a copy of the picture; http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9214/20050413.jpg which fits in nicely with your story
All credit to Type 40
love the flashbacks!
Go Doctor!
Great page.
Is that the Rani in the lower right corner of the fourth panel?
Panel 5 is amazing it has to be said good job rick!
Excellent, Rich! The Dalek should have known the Doctor would reject the offer. WE all knew!
Your talent never ceases to amaze me, fella. Wonderful stuff– every page of it!
Aha! Is that “Thete” and “Koschei” being scolded after a fight? And was that the hermit The Doctor would go see from time to time? Those who knew the Doctor from his youth knew he was a hothead. Iris Wildthyme mentioned it in “The Scarlet Empress” (I think that was the title of the novel) to 8 when they were on Hyspero. Guess the Master knew about that too.
So, how are they going to get rid of that Dalek conditioning? Let’s wait and see, when Rich draws the next pages! We look foward to the next pages! Keep going Rich! We’re sitting on the edge of our seats, anxious to see what happens next! (At least I am)
Good stuff, Rich. I’m guessing the hermit-esque, bearded Time Lord is K’anpo.
Lila Kooks: As the Doctor kept saying, you can’t believe anything that Iris Wildthyme says. She makes it all up, even with her ‘own version’ of the 5 Docs in one story. Also, as she is from spin-off material (books & the two Big Finish Audios; Yay Katy Manning!), she isn’t canon, and no reference to persons or events will appear in this strip
.
Wow! Powerful stuff! Nice work.
Interesting, not a lot of action but sometimes the action needs to subside for a bit so the story can advance. Excellent writing!
Oh! oh! Flashbacks to the Doctor’s life on Gallifrey!
So fun.
The flashbacks are fantastic!!! Keep up the great work!
This page is your finest work. Few Doctor Who writers would dare to attempt this but you dare to tell a character story among it all.
So well done Rich, well done.
Wonderful…….Wonderful…….Wonderful…..and I buy stuff from Amazon anyway but now I have more reason to….Rich and Family need a house (not the cranky Doctor….though Hugh would be fine for me LOL)…..BRAVO and a great way to end Friday the 13th
I like this rather a lot.
I am really enjoying this amalgamation of the Doctors into a single entity. I can truly imagine him as this on TV. I liked the flashback panels above. I assume panel 2 he is with his father; panel 3 with the hermit; panel 4 with the Master being scolded by Borusa. Awesome page. In response to some comments on earlier pages. The Doctor, regardless of whether he is in his first incarnation, or in one of his various regenerations, all share similar attributes of their personalities. As he undergoes his regeneration, as his physical form changes, certain aspects of his personality come to the fore while others get pushed back. But the core of his personality remains the same. As you observe all of the Doctors you’ll find similarities between various incarnations. Whether deliberate or not by the actors or production teams, each one is not all that different from the other. When they get together some pairings get along while others clash – very similar to what happens in family reunions.
I love the flashbacks, the young Doctor looks great, very much like a young Hartnell. I like the young Master too, love the faint moustache and goatee, it looks like he’s not quite old enough to grow a proper one yet. And it looks like the Rani is the school bully.
It seems awfully coincidental that this particular class of Time Lords caused so much trouble for the universe. Did they get a supply teacher who couldn’t control them?
Actually, I don’t think the Doctor met the Rani until his 6th carnation while he did perhaps heard about her through reputation since she was infamous at Gallifry for her experimentations.
“In a cave, in the hilside above my House, lived an old man. My mother told me to go to him, as he knew the Meaning of Life… …they where crisp and white and butifull.”
One of my favorate speaches from all of TV or litriture. Ah, I miss the UNIT days.
in panel 4, has he just had a fight with the Master? I remember him saying something about them messing up each-other’s time experements. It would be ironic if the Master’s homicidal grudge had part of it’s orogin in childhood pranks!
Sandman: I just saw Mark of the Rani for the first time and it felt like the three renegade Time Lords already new each other..
*grins like a loon* Flashbacks! To a young Doctor and young Master!! And the Doctor is assertive about the fact that he is AWESOME and doesn’t ‘turn people into soldiers’ or whatever poppycock Davros came up with in Journey’s End (which happens after this, I know…)
I love this comic, but I’m sad that it seems to be building to a climax
Heheheheh, the Doctor and the Master having a schoolyard brawl! Nice touch.
WOW just plain WOW.
love the No 9 position in pannal 6. also love the method of killing the dalek lol.
great work keep it up.
Loving these. I like how in the second panel you can see bits of the various Doctors in the man that I assume is his father. Great stuff.
Lol…I love panel 4. We’ve heard over and over again how they used to be friends, in school…it’s nice to see that for once! Though, this could be their first proper fight. It looks like the Doctor got the worst of whatever exploded.
This is a fantastic page! And I love how the MegaDoctor just _shoves_ the Dalek. Silly Dalek, mind tricks are for Jedi!
Rich: I know that the (8th) Doctor mentioned his father once before, in ‘The Movie’, but I don’t remember this grumpy, domineering dad scene. I wondering whether this was from a DW story, or is it ‘artistic licence’? I recognise all the other references here except for that one. You must have been swotting up on your Who for this. I love all your twists and turns!
Thanks for all your hard work and time.
Um, Rich! I LOVE amalgram Doctor! Me thinks he needs his own spin off comic…..
I love your designs of young!Doctor! They definitely look like young versions of Hartnell. Did you look for images of him when he was younger for a reference? I wouldn’t be surprised.
I also love your young!Master; he doesn’t have the beard, but he still looks like the Master. That’s quite the feat.
Damn, that’s a good page
For some reason Doctor’s dad reminds me faintly of 4 and 8
Tho he’s scolding in the one scene, we know the Doctor remembers having fun with him -but maybe 1 picked up some good berating techniques from him as well!
I like the Doctor picking himself up and pushing the Dalek off!…
I think that was the Master in panel 4 but he is right. He has brought more good than evil.
Go Doctor!
Amazing work.
Brilliant!
I’m gonna pull a Russell and say Hoo-ray.
That was fabulous, Rich. Almost like the “I have shown you yourself” scene in JE, but the Daleks just aren’t nearly as good at digging at the Doctor’s last nerve as Davros is.
Just when I think you can’t possibly surpass yourself, you do. You’re amazing.
Love the flashbacks, and especially the Doctor’s dirty look in panel 5. There’s a lot of 9’s anger seeping through and his posture says a lot as well. I’m running out of superlatives to use anymore… so, great job!
Yay!
I like how you draw the UberDoctor, and the looks on the young Doctor and Master’s faces. Keep it up!
Love the flashbacks! What is it that he has destroyed in Panel 2?
I remember meeting McCoy in Atlanta at a big Dr. Who presentaion(he asked us if he should keep his hat for his costume). They had a long trailer with props from the show including the TARDIS console,Bessie was parked outside the trailer so you could sit in her(I just wish I had someone take a photo of me in her!),and Jon Pertwee.I was standing inside a bulding next to McCoy watching Pertwee do a commerical for Georgia Public Television with a Dalek.I asked him if he would like a bit of advice. He said sure you fans know what you like.I told him he could play the part serious or funny but the one thing that all the doctors have in common is they get very angry when thier companion is threatened. He said that was really good advice and I felt on top of the world! In the 4th doctor episode Invasion of time the Doctor responds to Borusas telling him to remember his lessions in detachment. The Doctor responds”I’d rather care”That why we all love Dr. Who so much and why this comic rings so true.Rich brings out the careing nature of each Doctor.
Whoa.
Now, the Doctor is gonna open up that Dalek’s can… and find hisself some whup-@$$.
Just noticed- does the Rani have her hair in bunches? Somehow I can’t imagine her as a sweet little girl :p
Wow…That’s a Surprise to see The Doctor’s Academy Days!
One thing…I Didn’t know Dumbledore was a Time Lord!
Was the Academy “Hogwarts: Gallifrey”??
Anyway…Nice job touching on the Doctor’s VERY early Life!
I love this comic! I love it all! Love love love!
is the Doctor fighting the Dalek a composite or is it supposed to be the 8th?
OH YEAH!! GO DOCTOR!!!!
go rich!!
Rich,
I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that the Doctor “amalgamation” and the time-Daleks were the original vision that inspired this comic? Because in each case I say, “Bravo!”
Oh, and also- I predict that the Doctor will pull the helmet off of that Dalek to find HIMSELF inside!
PG LOL that is so Star Wars!
Loving the story.
that Dalek is screwed BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!
Uber-Doc is going BKM
oh back in the day when the Doctor was studying at the Jedi Temple…learning to be a mindful, and wise Jedi…X) lol
HA! That’s the Master, isn’t it? X) The Doctor looks like Snape…the hair…just the hair X) But that’s dandy, cuz I luv Snape!
not that it would make much sense but wouldn’t it be totally cool for a poster of Uber-Doc and the other eleven docs around him?
Love the flashbacks! And ÜberDoctor pushing the Dalek!
In panel 1, is that really supossed to be his Dad? There’s something about him that remindme of 6, must be the hair. Can’t help notice the smoke in panel 4, that must have been quite an explosion! And I like the Rani in the back with, is it Drax? You know, I read somewhere that according to a novel, those 4 plus The Meddling Monk, the War Chief and some other 2 guys, form a Group called the Deca in the Academy, and they all ended up Renegades.
What is little Doc doing in the second panel? I can’t figure it out.
Leafa: Maybe he was wasn’t focus enough and broke some toy that he suppose to build.
WalksInEternity, I remember Type40’s comic.
*digs into gargantuan library of bookmarks*
“The Whovian Observer,” it was called. The comic’s site is:
http://www.nightgig.com/whovian/
And no, I’m not Type40. I just read it. (Or at least, I used to. It hasn’t updated since October 2006.)
Also, maybe it’s just me, but I can easily imagine the young Rani being not unlike Lucy Van Pelt in personality. Making me wonder if the young Doctor was her Charlie Brown … or perhaps her Schroeder.
I love this page!
The Doc attacking the Dalek is a bit weird…but the flashbacks are very interesting.
Oh, you can see 9’s angry glower coming through good and strong. Good Job!
Hi Rich
I only found out about this a week ago and now I’m up to date with it. Just wanted to say that it is truly brilliant and you should be very proud.
The only problem is that, for as amazing as it has been to read up to this point all at once, I now have to wait for it to come page by page. Argh.
Ha, this reminded me of something I had come up with. In my Dr. Who fanfiction, I based that world’s Eleventh Doctor on myself [at least in appearance], and briefly began dropping hints that this incarnation strongly resembled the young First Doctor. In the 2nd panel, the Doctor looks a lot like me with longer hair lol. If the BBC decides to do something with a younger First Doctor, you better believe I’m gonna try like crazy to drop my name in lol.
PG: That, or nothing at all inside.
I’ve been thinking about Dalek. He’s made out of #10’s mind — just some re-aligned neurons as Mega-doctor says — but I wonder what part of #10’s mind he was constructed out of. Dalek almost acts like a human Id. (Woo, scary… ahem) Then again, Time Lords are not human, so who knows what aspect of #10 Dalek really came from, or if it’s something more-or-less Dalek implanted in #10’s brain. Only… does it look to anybody else as if Dalek isn’t quite acting like a Dalek?
Sorry, it seems that things between angle brackets don’t print. There was meant to be a “flashes back to Forbidden Planet” between “Dalek almost acts like a human Id.” and “Woo, scary…” My bad.
I particularly like how the Doctor keeps saying I. As another commentator said we often forget that he is actually a single person. The faces and personality might change but it is still one man. He is a single entity only time and temporal abnormalities allow him to act otherwise.
So Awesome! A Young First Doctor!!! I Love It!
@ WalksInEternity: great link. The little heart over the i in the Rani’s message absolutely made that piece.
Oh, your comic’s good too, Rich.
I’ve often contemplated how youth is the privilege of a Time Lord’s first life. All those people they can be, but only one of them is ever a child. Perhaps that’s why all the Doctors past the first incarnation are so much more childish, at times, than he was. They’re all trying to compensate for not having a childhood of their own.
Or perhaps it’s that his first self was never allowed to be a child at all, in the harsh conservative society he was born into. That would explain it too… He had to grow old and die before he ever had a chance to live like a kid.
You know, that would make a good spinoff series…The Gallifreyan Academy….the adventures of Young Doctor Who….sounds good to me, Rich, you gonna draw it?
a.
Ha ha I like the pictures with the Doctor being a kid. Rich you should have showen the Doctor pulling the Master’s pants up. HAHA. The Doctor’s a bully. Ha ha. No not really, I was just joking. Get work!
I’d stay away from “young Doctor” stories, as a rule. Seeing too much of his origins somewhat dissolves the character’s mystique as a mythical, nameless stranger.
Oh my good, this is probably the best page of the whole comic.
Its rigth up there with the TV-stuff.
I salute you Rich!
Excellent page Rich man
but what was the Doctor doing in panel 2 that he was being got at for?
Wow, brilliant page! I love the flashbacks.
JustAWanderer: Thanks for finding that link. I loved the Torchwood strip on there, too!
