The 10 Doctors – Page 107

The Cybermen discuss the logical problem of forcefully determining the identity of the new arrival, who turns out to be the 9th Doctor. But he keeps them guessing as he plays with their tin-heads.

Discussion (197) ¬

  1. Sean

    *Yawn*, first again.

    And Nine’s back! Awesome-sauce! Clever devil…

  2. ScaledMystic

I can hear Nine’s voice in Panel 6 because that is exactly something he’d say, and just the way he’d say it!

Do the cybermen know about the TARDIS chamelion circuit? It might be fixed someday.

  3. Laura

haha i love that “ooh ooh i know i know.. you could ask” lol its great to see Nine again
there is only one word to describe this comic FANTASTIC!

  4. Heather

That should have been a dead giveaway to the Cybermen, when he said “Ooh, Ooh, I know” etc. :) But of course, Cybermen don’t have a sense of humour and can’t recognise sarcasm when they hear it. Otherwise they’d have known right off that it had to be the Doctor. Nobody else sasses the Cybermen like that.

Hmm, I wonder where Drax has got to…

Was there orginially some other speech in the last panel? That speech balloon is an odd shape, given the text that’s in it. Or did it just slip by and you’d scanned it before neatening up that bit?

Ok, ramble coming to an end now. :)

  5. wulfae

Those are some sweet drawings of Nine, there. I too wonder where Drax is at, though I imagine that Nine is a distraction while Drax pilfers the cyber-technology… I mean rescues the companions.

  6. earthy

My fangirly heart leaps to see Nine being awesome. Love this comic; thanks so much for it!

  7. karanadon

YAY! Nine is back *dances for joy* and the dialogue is just so HIM!

I hope it’s only a matter of time before “fantastic!” crops up somewhere!

  8. Doctor-Who-Fan

    Ya 9 is back :D :D :D

  9. JustAWanderer

Hey, we were right! Go Nine!

  10. Rassilon001

Hahahahaha yes! Oooh Nine messing with Cyber-logic tin-cretins… Fantastic!

Okay, Oncoming Storm, go save your blonde… oh, and best pick up Taegan, Peri, and Ace while you’re at it. Finally… things are starting to work out for the Doctors team.

  11. Jaysun

Ah Zach, come on…just enjoy the comic.

  12. Jaysun

I meant ZACK not ZACH, sorry for the mis-spelling.

  13. KLCtheBookWorm

Yeah, Nine! Time to make their logic circuits melt!

  14. Megan

hahahahahah, awesome. Big mess of things though, Nine was supposed to be keeping away from Rose. tsk tsk. Cybermen are doomed now for messing with teh Rose.

  15. scionofgrace

NINE TO THE RESCUE! *Love* the entrance. So him.

  16. MarrowMan

I enjoy everey panel of every page thanks R-Dog

  17. Jeremy

Great comic! You have got 9 done sooo well!

  18. brad

haha i was hopein 9 would be back couse he’s one of the best. >:)

  19. Kitt

Lol the cybermen are so dead…

    messin’ with rose -
    9 won’t be happy!!!

    lol

  20. Other Chris

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!! Number Nine has returned. And knowing him, he’s probably got some ingenious plan up his sleeve! Again.

Thank you for this stuff, Rich. IF there’s one word to describe it…Take a wild guess.

  21. Tom

    Zack-
Hey, Six happens to be my favorite Doctor! (I know, I’m weird)

    Rich-
Excellent work. For a moment there I thought it was going to be Turlough and company in the Rani’s Tardis.

  22. Charlotte

    Rich, you rock!!!

And regardless of who everyone’s favourite is – chill people! We’re in good hands :)

  23. eleventhdr

I knew nine was out there somewhere guess he figured a way to diguise the tardis oncea gain hmmm knew he would!.

what’s this about drax is he in here somewhere as well.

The cybermen what’s with them anyway?

    Now what’s!?

  24. Captain Shade

Looks like we called it, with Nine. You’re so good at getting everyone “spot on”.

  25. Turnip

I love this. So very, very much.

Did I ever mention how much I love it when enemies simply start debating with each other, completely ignoring everything else, including the hostages and the hero? I can /hear/ the Cybermen. Nothing beats a good forensic battle!

  26. Child of Zion

Eeep! I love Nine! Thank you, Rich!
“Ohh! Ooohhh! Ooooohhhh! I know! I know! You could ASK!…Nope, too late, I’m not going to tell you now.”

    List update!
    ~~~
    One: Plummeting into a dieing star
    Two: Stuck in space in the TARDIS with Glitz
    Three: Captured by the Sauntaurans
    Four: Trapped or dead in the air shaft
    Five: Trapped in space, effectively under the Master’s control
    Six: Controlling (or captured by, your interpretation) the Old Daleks
    Seven: “Delaying Davros’s repair work”
    Eight: Visiting with K’anpo Rimpoche and Leela
    Nine: Rescuing Teagan, Perri, Ace, and Rose
    Ten: Captured by the Valeyard
    ~~~

Also, I gotta agree with Jaysun, Zack; if you don’t like Nine, or the comic, or whatever, you don’t have to read it anymore…I’m not trying to get rid of you, but please, let Rich do what he wants.

  27. Child of Zion

Now, when Nine leaves the Cybers a shivering heap of scrap metal, Ten can come and finish them off! Yay! :D

  28. Child of Zion

One more: I especially like Nine’s look in panel 6.

    Shutting up. :D

  29. carol

Cooll! Wondered where Nine went! :)

    But where is Ten! :(

  30. Arista

*giggles at 9* Gawds, I love his sarcastic/slightly sadistic streak! Awesome job, Rich. ^_^ *gives a cookie*

  31. ibishtar

    HAHAHA! The expectation, it hurts.

  32. Lisa

    Hehehe yay for 9!

  33. Kimberly

Woo hoo! Go 9! I love the last panel – The body language sez it all.

No, cookie, Rich, but I DO have a box of jelly babies for you! ;)

  34. Clock King

Yah nine is back that is FANTASTIC!

  35. Captain Chaotica

Okay, Zack? You are obviously just a common garden troll. (Playground insults like “retarded” sort of give it away.) So I am going to stop acknowledging your existence now, and I urge everybody else here to do the same.
Now, mind you, if he was saying he didn’t like Six in polite, full sentences with reasons, that’d be a different matter. It’s not what he’s saying that makes him a troll. It’s HOW he’s saying it.

But on a more serious note, come on…Six gets _enough_ slamming around here as it is. In Rich’s own posts, for a start…(I’ve read all the comments–lurked a long time before I first posted–and every time somebody actually fangirls/boys Six or defends him, Rich does a rant post that _slams_ Six into the ground. The one a few pages back was the most extreme–but NOT the first. I can’t point to exact page numbers right now but I know I’ve seen that happen here before.)
And he’s already the least popular among the fans in general. Come on. Give the poor guy a break. You don’t have to like him…just…how ’bout the old classic policy of “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all?”

I think it’s okay to have favourites but you shouldn’t go around _hating_ on the ones you like least. There’s enough negativity around already–we don’t need it here as well.

    …Notorious

  36. Nick

Yep, I knowed it. Nine needed to get back into action.

Bets will now be taken on how long until the Cybermens’ heads start exploding from confusion and impatience

  37. Fizzix

    Earthy: YANA.

    !!

  38. Dr Nick R.

    Hi Everybody
    (nsert your text here)
    zacks A TROLL cya
    Bye everybody
    (insert txt here)

  39. Laura

Woo-hoo! YES! I knew it, I knew it would be Nine! Oh man, he’s at his best and everything. Cracked me up. Looks fantastic too!

  40. Child of Zion

I gotta say that I second the motion, Captain Chaotica. I haven’t seen any Six episodes yet, and all the negative comments about him are giving me a bad impression. I also agree that saying, “Six sux. lol.” is waaayyy different than saying “I don’t really like Six because….”, and I hope if I hate Six after watching his episodes that the former voice isn’t mine.

Don’t hate the Doctor, people…hate the writers! :D Not Rich, of course. ;)

    …Don’t feed the Troll.

    -_~

  41. Kat-Klingon

Oh slick way to bring Nine back, Rich! And in a different TARDIS! Now we finally get to see Nine dealing with his old foes. Just like the old days and with Nine’s special flavor!

    Well done sir!

  42. ch1ps

nice entrance by the 9th Doctor! …he kinda looks like Paulus now…his face in the 7th panel is really creeping me out. I’ve never seen the 9th Doctor look as happy as that (excepting Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways). *shudders*

    Reminds me of this quote:
Cptn Jack – “It’s called a vortex manipulator. He’s not the only one who can time travel.”
10th Doc – “Oh, excuse me! THAT is not time travel. It’s like, I’ve got a sports car, you’ve got a space-hopper.”

I really hope you’re not working yourself to death, Rich…great page!

  43. ch1ps

And this time, the Doc really does have a sports car (even if it is Drax’s Tardis)

  44. Dev

ive only commented once before but this entry made me smile

and it made me miss seeing nine on tv! He was my first Doctor :D

    Good to see him again.

  45. Miyo

*Pumps fists in the air* Fantastic reentry by number 9!!! Love the dialouge : D He is, was, and will always bee a smartarse.

  46. joe england

Rich… I just have to say. The Stolen Earth was one of the best episodes of Doctor Who I have ever seen. And it reminded me of your comic to no end.

  47. Rich

    A few things!

1: As usual, thank you all for the encouragement and compliments!

2: I don’t hate the 6th Doctor. I didn’t *slam* him, I spoke a simple fact. The 6th Doctor was dark. I think Colin Baker was great and should have been given the chance to play him longer and see where it would have gone. “The Stranger” episodes are a hint of where he wanted it to go. Fascinating stuff.
I hate the WRITING of the episodes in his era. They were terrible. There’s no getting around the fact that his episodes were the worst the series ever had, but I don’t blame the 6th Doctor for that, nor do I blame Colin Baker in any way.
I love the Doctor as a character, in all his incarnations. It was important for me to emphasize this and this is part of the reason why I gave the 6th Doctor and the 8th Doctor (the two most unpopular and underestimated incarnations) very important roles in this story.
(Peri, on the other hand… yergh)

  48. Sean

Indeed, Colin deserved better, and he’s gotten it through the audios, the books, and this comic. Honestly, you’d have no trouble casting him for this.

And I agree, I love all ten Doctors as though they were one person. Sure, I’ll say one of them is my favorite, but then I watch or listen to another one, and they’ll become my favorite for a while.

  49. joe england

Indeed, each Doctor is… well, the Doctor! I find there’s something charming and watchable in each of them.

  50. lunalovegoddess

Rich: “There’s no getting around the fact that his episodes were the worst the series ever had, but I don’t blame the 6th Doctor for that, nor do I blame Colin Baker in any way.”

Thank you! He may not be my favorite regeneration of the Doctor, but Six was interesting. With better scripts, perhaps he might have grown on fans a bit. I’d only seen the Trial of the Time Lord story arc, before my husband reintroduced me to Six. Let’s just say that I wasn’t impressed at the time. I’d actually thought that it wasn’t the same series (not knowing about regeneration at the time) and had been quite confused why Tom Baker was no longer the Doctor. The more I saw of Colin Baker, the better a feel I got for the character and began to like him. [If anything, I couldn't stand Mel. I like how you've portrayed her, though.]

That said, the comic keeps me on my toes, and certainly helps me get through the week-long anticipation for new episodes. You’ve got a well-tuned mind, and I like the directions that you’ve been taking the storyline. Kudos!

  51. WhoRU?

I did feel that we are quite right in saying the Colin Baker was not given a fair go with the writing. The same writers wanted to inject sex appeal with Peri having less than appopriate clothes that really cheapen the Doctors image. Lucky she got a bit of decent clothing outing in her last season. But who could forget Colin strangling Peri during his regenration phase. Very dark indeed. They made him have a split personality trait.

  52. Leeanne

    very funny

  53. Leeanne

p.s where I live Dr who starts up with the 4 sires to night Im so exsited.

  54. Hark

    HAHAHAHAHHHAHA

    V. good Rich. no w8 HILARIOUS!!!! Luv the way 9 calls them ‘tin heads’ :=)

  55. Eala Dubh

Rich: Try and get your hands on a few of the audio Doctor Who adventures by Big Finish to get a real taste of how Colin Baker plays the role when he’s not encumbered by lousy writing, garish sets and that awful coat. Out of all the audio Doctors (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th), the Sixth is unquestionably the best.

  56. Marquise

Better end it before 11 arrives ;)

  57. Captain Chaotica

Yeah. Sorry, Rich, it’s just that a couple of times when you’ve talked about Six the tone that came across–and I am aware that tone REALLY doesn’t translate through text very well–to me, anyway, seemed a bit…vitriolic? Enough to kind of bother me. But I am very aware that you gave Six a good part in the comic, and I’m glad of that. I, like everybody else, just ADORED the “Then prove it! Who is the Keeper and how do you know me?” bit. (But I didn’t comment on it ‘cos it was old by the time I got here. The one that was on the front page when I first discovered the comic was…hmmm…the one where Maxil shoots Damon, I think.)

And you’re right about the Stranger. It was because of _you_ (indirectly), your comments on an earlier strip, that I found out about the existence of all the BBV side-stuff at all–and I’m very glad I discovered it!
It saddens me that the writing has to be THAT bad during Six’s era. I mean…geh. Bad writing in general I don’t like, but especially on a show I love that much…

As for the audios, I have not heard any _yet_ but plan to. I did hear that Six was voted the _most_ popular radio Doctor on the BBCi website. Woot!

Back before I became an actual Whovian and only vaguely knew the bits of the show that had seeped into the more or less American pop consciousness mainstream, I too had this picture of “Doctor Who” as Tom Baker, and he was the only one I knew. So when a friend of mine invited me and some other nerd-friends over to watch the _last_ serial, “Survival”, with him, I had no IDEA who the heck this guy was…
So yeah, lunalovegoddess, I know where you’re coming from with the “thinking it’s a different series”. I didn’t know about the regeneration thing either, until it was explained to me that night. “Oh, no, he regenerates–he can do it twelve times. The one you’re thinking of was a few back, actually.”

Anyway, enough of all this, sorry. About THIS strip here: That is one _great_ entrance of Nine’s, and nice to see him back again. (Although I’m really curious about is Four dead or just hurt?) Ha! I also very approve of the “CARdis”. How it’s a classic retro car. With tailfins. Very…appropriate, somehow. :P
(And for those who say that Paulus sometimes looks like Nine…_yeah_, I can see that resemblance too. Demetrios and Six not so much, but Paulus and Nine? Hmm.)

    Finally shutting up…

    ***Possible Spoiler Alert****

    Spoiler removed by site admin

  59. Rich

Spencer, as a lot of us (including myself) haven’t seen that episode yet, I must ask that you not post spoilers.

And to answer the question, no. I am not altering the story to keep up with current episodes.

  60. Rassilon

    Wow shortest incarnation ever.

“New feet spooky, hmm extra toe on the left foot it’s a big one…. now then where was I”

Trips over Rose’s gun, bangs head on console just like Six did.

    “URGH Oh no not again!”

  61. Heather

The first time through Six’s incarnation I disliked it intensely. I knew Colin Baker from other shows he’d done, and hated the way they’d written him as the Doctor. Also, Peri was and always has been my least favourite companion. I didn’t like her with Peter Davison and I didn’t like her with Colin Baker either. Then his second season gave us Trial of a Time Lord and if possible it was even worse than his first season. It also gave us my second-least-favourite companion in Mel.

However, just a few years ago I was showing my new American hubby all my Doctor Who recordings (I had all the complete stories on video tape), and when we got to Colin Baker’s era I gritted my teeth to sit through it again. I hadn’t even rewatched them when I’d taped them, just seeing enough to be sure I had all the episodes taped properly. I didn’t like them, but couldn’t bear not to have the complete set, given that UKTV was showing the entire Doctor Who in order from whoa to go.

But … it wasn’t so bad the second time around. Knowing how he’d been told to play the Doctor and knowing in advance that the stories were dismal, I could ignore that aspect of the shows and concentrate on the good bits. And there were definitely good bits. There were snippets of outstanding performances, and if you simply accepted that the Sixth Doctor was going to be an obnoxious, even-more-arrogant-than-usual -for-the-Doctor bully with a bipolar personality, then you could sit back and enjoy the craftmanship that went into bringing that unlikeableness to the screen. I wished I’d given those seasons a second viewing long before, because I found that the second time around I actually enjoyed them quite a bit.

For those who have seen the Sylvester McCoy story The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, go to the part where he’s addressing the Gods of Ragnarok and imagine that they’re the BBC executives. It’s definitely a rant about how they treated Doctor Who during the 80’s, particularly Colin Bake’s tenure as Doctor. The whole story, in fact, is an allegory about the production of Doctor Who. Some of the characterisation are more obvious than others (I’m sure many here will recognise Whizz Kid as the quintessential fanboy).

The upshot of all this rambling is that Six really deserves a fair go. He may not be what people wanted or expected in the Doctor, but he’s certainly not deserving of anyone’s hatred.

  62. Child of Zion

joe england: Is “The Stolen Earth” the next one in this season?

Leeanne: No way. In one way, I feel bad for you, because you’re behind me. In another way, I’m kinda jealous…Do me a favor, huh? Laugh at the episode, “Partners in Crime”. Purely awesome.

Rich: A big THANK YOU for censoring Spencer’s spoiler (no offence, Spencer, but I do my best to stay away from spoilers). :D

PEOPLE! NO SPOILERS IN COMMENTS FOR EPISODES UNTIL EVERYONE HAS HAD A REASONABLE CHANCE TO WATCH THEM!

If you want to discuss the latest episodes and what impact they may or may not have on The 10 Doctors, take it to the 10 Doctors forums and talk away to your heart’s content there, under spoiler bars. In fact, I encourage all comments which are not one-hit comments on the strip to be taken to the forum – it’s much easier on our bandwidth, and speeds page loading times for 10 Doctors readers on dial-up.

In summary? FORUMS, PEOPLE. Then your comments won’t get deleted. Don’t make me shut down an otherwise awesome comments feature because you can’t stop talking about new eps before they’ve aired in North America.

  65. Kitt

I agree with Hilary – even though i live in UK, people in America havent seen Stolen Earth…

    x Kitt x

  66. Kitt

    Love love lovvvvveeeeeeeeeeeee this page…
    only one complaint…
    WHERES TEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please put ten in next slide.

  69. samii x

yeah i wanna see what’s happened to ten and the valeyard…

  70. szia0532

In response to Kitt & Other Chris’ comments, BBC iPlayer and DW website too!

  71. Kitty

My name is a link to the BBC Doctor Who official website, for Americans who wanna watch DW series 4 eps…

  72. Brian

Some people in North America *have* seen Stolen Earth….but I digress. Excellent addition to the story here, as usual. I really wish Chris Eccleston had wanted to keep the role for more than a single season. I love David Tennant as the Doctor, but it would have been nice to see at least two or three seasons with Eccleston first.

As for Colin Baker, his Doctor was so different than Peter Davison, I think it took many of us a while to warm up to him. Between some lackluster scripts and constant interferance from the upper management of the BBC, I don’t think Colin Baker truly got a chance to shine. Although, having said that, there were a few of his episodes that I would hold up as being as good as any in the entire run of the show.

  73. Rassilon

Kitty is that a direct link to the official site, it won’t (or shouldn’t) work unless you are in the UK or use a UK proxy server.

  74. Kitty

    ok thanks rassilon :)

  75. Turnip

I feel slightly sorry for the poor Cybermen. They can’t help it if they weren’t programmed to understand humor. As it is, the Doctor probably made them short-circuit just trying to understand his unique brand of logic.

And I still feel sorry for Nine when he finds out that Ace has converted Rose to the ways of the pyromaniac.

  76. Mreen

Nine would find it ‘part of her charm’, Turnip :)

Nine really is fantastic in this page- I love his reappearence! After all the other Doctors ending up stumped, in peril, and rage, it’s great to see the Doctor back on top of his game and bringing down the enemy!

and yes, they really should have known better than to mess with Rose. Bcs the Doctor takes that seriously – and if they have trouble with his sense of humor, it’s going to be so much worse when he takes them seriously :D

  77. Brian

Rich, just discovered your site a couple of days ago.
I am so awestruck by the care, intelligence and love you are putting into this series!

What a gift to all of us! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You are brilliant!

This is the way a multi-doctor story should be handled. I always thought that they could be wonderful if done well.

And, I absolutely love Colin Baker’s Doctor. It takes an extraordinary actor to pull a brilliant performance out of some rather shoddy scripts. He deserved better. Yes, his audios are very choice, and thank God he’s gotten another go at the part. Thank you for giving his Doctor a more than fair shake, too!

Zack, I am sure you aren’t really a troll.

    Take care, all.

  78. Beard

Whew, been a while since I’ve gotten a chance to sit back and comment. Let’s see…

I’ve got to say in spite of myself that I sort of miss the subtly sneering Cybermen you saw in the 80s, but I also think the Cybermen should fully embrace the corporate paradigm for an added layer of creepy that isn’t “Daleks without the sass.”, but I digress. Their act here really fits the unique MO of the Cybermen. “What’s our best shot at getting out of this alive?” “Get the Doctor here to un-Dalek the planet, give him his pals back so he lets us find some moon to wait this out on.” is a coldly rational plan that possesses a humility you do not often see in Sci-Fi villains, and it’s an interesting contrast with the relentless nature of the Daleks and the smug cockiness of the Master and the Sontarans.

Also, kudos on the Rose and Ace bonding. Spiel about either character aside, the two girls cheering like it’s some kind of awesome slumber party while blowing up Cybermen with home made explosives is just darn fine writing.

  79. Seileach

I just discovered this comic late last night and have gone all the way through already—it is absolutely wonderful! You have captured all the Doctors to a “T” and done a great job with the other characters as well, be they Companions, villians, etc. I’ve been a Who fan since I first saw the Tom Baker episodes on my local PBS station back in the 80s, although Ten is my favorite. :)
I also am intrigued by your Hovse of Pavlvs comic and plan to go back and read that from the beginning too. Your writing and art are both fanTAStic and I look forward to the upcoming strips!

  80. Chris

I don’t dig the Peri dissin’!

I *like* Peri. I like the way Nicola Bryant managed to get an “All these corridors look the same” joke into every story, despite the fact that they were never there in the script. I liked the way she and the Doctor used to bitch at each other like Ernie and Bert.

Oh and there was something else I liked about her. Um. Hang on.

  81. Arianna_BadWolf

For those who want to see current episodes, there is a place called Planet Galifrey that has current episodes on.

As for Captain and Child, I do agree… a nice shunning shall do for him… it works on most trolls.

As for the writing for Six… I think that’s the reason I dislike him so much. The dialogs could have been so much better. I suppose Colin could have done a good job if he had been given the chance and a bit of a steering wheel for his Doctor. However, he didn’t get the chance, because they were told to get rid of him ASAP or Doctor Who would not be returning. Which is why the exit wasn’t the greatest. he was a little upset and refused to come back for the regeneration.

I’d rate him the worst, but through no fault of Colin’s, by any means. Then again, I’d most likely list the first three up there too, since I haven’t had the luxury of really digging into their stories, although the opening for the first was pretty nice.

But Rich, this is wonderful. I come back from my family weekend thing….(I am up three stuffed animals from the carnival/fair and a dream catcher, although its pink, it is pretty) Had funnel cake and other goodies…and I lost my train of thought….

oh yeah… I come back to THREE pages… i was thrilled. More? I don’t mind which, Doctors or Paulus… they gave me an extra day off of work…

  82. ch1ps

Ah, it’s so very 9th Doctor-ish. I’ve been printing out the pages and putting them in a folder so i can read them all like a comic book (i put the title and that colouring of the Doctors at the front XD).

I should try reading the whole thing with the Doctor’s voices…except that i haven’t heard any of their voices except 9, 10 and 4 (his voice was deeper than i expected…).

Gah, someday i will have a Doctor Who marathon with the classic series. It’ll take about…ooh, a year? lol

Still laughing at this page…hah! Fantastic, Rich!

  83. alykon

LOVE 9 my fave doctor best of the lot
live in australia and did any one see the voyage of the damed on chanel 2?
    IT WAZ AUSOME
=) just wanted to have my say

  84. Dr. Bunsen

    GREAT poise from Doc Nine!

  85. Sinead

Rich: great to see Nine again. Christopher Eccleston – a fantastic ‘Doctor’ – and you’ve captured him so well!

Second the requests for no spoilers. In Australia, as alykon said ‘Voyage of the Damned’ aired this weekend (hi alykon–yes I was watching–great fun). Next weekend we get to see ‘Partners in Crime’. Thank you Hilary and Rich for removing spoilers from these pages.

    On another tack:
I have found it interesting reading peoples comments about The Doctor and the actors who have played him. My personal favourite is Patrick Troughton. … I also very much enjoy watching all the other actors who have played one of my favourite fictional characters.

One thing that surprised me over time have been comments read re Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. I never minded Colin Baker’s Doctor, but found the Sylvester McCoy years a bit hard to take. Not so much because of the actor, but that most of the stories during his time seemed (to me) to be rather silly. (Just an opinion. Please don’t take it personally anyone. I know there are others who love those stories – and that’s good.) Though I must say, I have enjoyed Seven, and the pairing of Two and Seven in this comic–most likely because it is such a good story.

    {And (dare I say it?) last year I absolutely loved ‘42′, but could take or leave ‘Human Nature’ and ‘The Family of Blood’. It takes all sorts to make the world go round.}

I respect others opinions, and hesitate in posting this. But throw it into the mix in agreement with others that we all have our own varied and individual reactions to what we see. And that’s very good.

What we have in common is that we love ‘The Doctor’, and Rich’s brilliant comic.
    Lucky, lucky us! :-)

  86. Rich

    I agree with you, Sinead.
I found McCoy VERY watchable as the Doctor. He was quirky, silly, fun, but could turn dangerous serious in an instant. I wasn’t too fond of the sudden mysterious depths they tried to introduce during his tenure, suddenly, against all evidence in the last 25 years of the series, he’s suddenly MORE than just a rogue Time Lord. And I found a few of his episodes didn’t make any sense at all.
I had trouble sitting through “The Greatest Show in the Galaxy”, I don’t care that it was a parable of the making of the series, it was aimless and came across as more of a bad dream than a proper Doctor Who story “The Happiness Patrol” ranks as one of my all time hate episodes. On the other hand, “Remembrance of the Daleks” was a great wrap up for the marvellous tin beasties and Davros until their return with Eccleston.
So while the production values and writing weren’t as horrendously cheese crap filled as poor Colin Baker’s run was, they seemed to try to get far too metaphysical and symbolic.

Still, I feel that given a few more episodes, a few more seasons, they could have been at least as good as some of Pertwee and Tom Baker’s episodes. McCoy is a hoot!

  87. Sean

Ah, now see, now we’re talking about McCoy, and now HE’S my favorite Doctor for the time being. I think his best season was Season 25, where wasn’t too silly and wasn’t too dark. In fact, it’s because of him I took up spoon-playing, and now I do it very well. You’d be amazed how much the women like spoon-playing!

  88. Batmanofni

Brillaint, 9 to the rescue, do you think he could be the first Doctor to comment on Peri’s twin assets. Just a thought.

  89. Dan_raven

Bat, save the Peri comments for Captain Jack.

  90. Tangerine

Ah the trap of wacky logic.
Kinda like the whole Cybus Cybermen vs the Cult of Skaro, only funnier and with a car disguised as a TARDIS.

  91. Chris

Actually…I quite like the Sixth Doctor…*avoids bricks being thrown at me*

Keep up the good work Rich, this comic has become religious reading for me. Top stuff:)

  92. Os

Yes! Yes! Yes! (repeat a few million times) Doctor Nine!

  93. Lily Knotwise

OMG I LOVE NINE. I forgot how snarky he was. :D

  94. Lily Knotwise

Zack: *clears throat* DONNA IS AMAZING, YOU INSULT HER AND I’LL KEEL YOU.

And for the record, every single Doctor is fantastic, so bugger off.

  95. JustAWanderer

Query: It’s been a while since I’ve seen “The Armageddon Factor” — did we actually see Drax’s TARDIS during that one? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure I’ve seen or heard of his TARDIS being disguised as a car somewhere before.

  96. Captain Shade

It was a car in a book or two…I have one with it as a car. But it’s a cheesy “choose you’re own story” book.

  97. Edrei

I can’t wait to see Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart or the Delgado Master (possibly the Pratt/Beevers incarnation as well).

  98. Rich

JustAWanderer: Yeah, Drax’ TARDIS is present in “The Armageddon Factor”, but we never see it. I got the idea for it being so from the very cheesey “choose your own adventure” book the Cap is talking about.

  99. Fangarius

Hey, guys! Sorry for not commenting sooner as usual. I may have to call for Doctor 10 for fetching my boss back from his vacation, since I’ve been working more than I’d prefer. If only my store was a TARDIS…

Anyway, love Nine’s sudden appearance. Sort of like Bugs Bunny appearing and confusing the heck out of the villains, in this case, the Cybermen.

As for the Sixth Doctor, yes, I felt Colin Baker was off right at first, but mainly because in my perspective, he never was given a chance developing the character in the way the other actors got to during their stints. Also the episodes were haphazardly written at times and the whole BBC dispute didn’t help matters any.

Oddly enough when Marvel UK printed comics based on the Sixth Doctor, I felt they were better written and allowed Colin’s version to develop into what the Doctor should’ve been if given half the chance.

Now before I get blasted about Rich focusing on the BBC series and not the other mediums, I realize this, the only reason I make such reference is, I’ve never watched any ‘Stranger’ episodes, so I can’t really make an accurate comparison except from other forms I’ve experienced dealing with Doctor Who in general.

Anyhoo, I’m wondering about the First Doctor’s plight, speculating on how he’ll get rescued from his plight. Possibly from Nyssa and Mel searching for Glitz? Just speculation, since I know Rich might have his own plan for saving Doctor One, but one can deduce, can’t one?

And yes, Captain Shade, Drax’s TARDIS appears to be a car in a Choose Your Own Adventure book, where you were supposed to be searching for The Doctor, with the help of Drax and K9, if I recall.

Hopefully, we’ll see what more interesting items Rich has in store for us.

  100. Turnip

You know, Nine appears to be very comfortable with the Cardis. Somehow, it just looks natural for him to be leaning against a topless sports car. Must be the leather jacket…leather and sports cars go hand in hand, yes?

Also, I believe that the gun-wielding Cyberman lost his gun’s shoulder strap in the second to last panel.

Wait, why would a Cyberman need a shoulder strap for his gun? I mean, it’s not like their arms can really get tired, being all…cybernetic and such.

Alykon, Time Crash was a scene written for the UK’s Children In Need appeal. It featured #5 & #10 doctors. It was written by The Moff & I really enjoyed it. Check it out & the other Children in Need scene

  106. Chris

I agree with Rich on the basis that Colin Baker was there at the wrong time. I like instability in characters, and the Doctor, wrestling with his own Hyde would have been so much better if they hadn’t temporarily run out of ideas. 8, however, I just don’t like. Deal with it.

    My favourite Doctors were 5 and 3;
5 because he is awesome, along with the fact that he died heroically, if unsatisfactorily. He also played for the Aussies in the Ashes in one episode! Go aussie!
3 because he’s kinda militant. There’s also the fact that he was just awesome in the shows. And he had Sarah Jane Smith as a companion, who, thanks to her ‘damsel in distress’ nature, gives him a whole new level of cool.

I personally did not like 4. He was around for too long, he was unlikeable, and he hates companions. (He mentions this to the White Guardian, when Romana joins him)
Apparently, Tom Baker quit because he hated the actor of Adric.
All I have to say is, HOORAY FOR ADRIC AND HIS RIDICULOUS HAIRCUT!
And also special thanks to the Master, for chucking him off a satellite dish.

I’m going to shut up now.

  107. Chris

Also, before I forget, 9 was oblivious, not unlikeable.

  108. Hilary

Saph: Yes. All posts with links in them are filtered until I can get a chance to manually approve them – it’s one of the filters I use for trying to keep spam out of the comments pages. It’s up now.

  109. Saph

Thank you Hilary, for that explaination. It never occured to me about spam – nasty stuff – in both it’s forms!

And of course, I don’t look like I am loosing it now! Lol!

    @Chris:

re: “I agree with Rich on the basis that Colin Baker was there at the wrong time. I like instability in characters, and the Doctor, wrestling with his own Hyde would have been so much better if they hadn’t temporarily run out of ideas.”

Look, Who fans in general, i hate to say it but the entire problem with Doctor Six is Colin Baker’s lack of acting talent. That’s it. You watch the documentaries where Colin had grandiose ideas for the Doctor, that he thought of him as this complex character, but HE JUST COULDN’T PULL IT OFF. At the time, there was a rumor that Brian Blessed (later Ycranos) was considered for the part but wasn’t available. Imagine a truly bombastic proper actor doing Doctor Six. Or how about an actor with depth like those guys over in America (almost) at the same time: Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner.

It’s sad to say because Colin is such a proponent of the show and the biggest Who fan of the lot by far. But folks, watch the videos. Especially “The Two Doctors,” where Patrick Troughton tries to show him how it’s done…

    This rant now over.

    Cheers, all.

  113. Neon

Glad to see my personal fave doctor back!

And any chance we will see OTHER versions of the master….would love to see your take on Simm Master

It’s so obvious to say this but, FANTASTIC!
    NIne is back.

    Happy Canada Day everyone!

    To Hilary,

Thanks for that explanation about links in posts. I don’t normally post links in my comments, but sometimes I do. And it’s a little disconcerting for my post to disappear into the ether without some kind of message from the system–like, submitted for approval or unable to deliver to address, etc.
Otherwise I think it’s a problem with my browser (I took too long to write my post and my computer froze up–which happens sometimes when I am writing a yahoo email) and I re-do post and send again. I don’t mind waiting for approval if I know about it.
    Happy Canada Day!
Yes, Nine does look good with a car. Of all the Drs, he’s the one who doesn’t look awkward around a car. And, as much as I liked Pertwee’s Dr, I didn’t like him with Bessie. It feels like Sarah Jane Smith with a “sonic” lipstick!! Oh-please! How patronizing! If Sarah can have a K-9, she can certainly handle a regular sonic screwdriver.

  117. Hilary

DJ: Do you have a popup blocker running? You should get a message from the system that the comment is being held for moderation every time that one gets filed in the admin queue.

  118. DJ

Yes, I do have a pop-up blocker! Trying to avoid spam/ads when I’m browsing. I didn’t realize it would also block something that I had triggered (by trying to post something.) Hmm. Okay. Thanks for telling me. I don’t think I’ll turn off the blocker, but I will remember that some posts are being screened. Thanks.

  119. DJ

Sorry for the double posting, Hilary. I just remembered though, that when a pop-up is blocked. I usually get a message from my computer saying that a pop-up is blocked. And that didn’t happen when I posted something with links–at another site/blog. It was just as if I hadn’t posted at all. No
message about a blocked pop-up or about my post awaiting moderation, etc.
Anyway, this response is sorta of topic. So if you want to delete this after reading, its fine with me.

    Questions Answered:

    Scaled Mystic:
Do the cybermen know about the TARDIS chamelion circuit? It might be fixed someday.

I suspect they do. They seem to know quite a bit about Time Lords by this point. Just that in their experience with the Doctor, he’s always shown up with his Blue Box.

    Heather:
Was there orginially some other speech in the last panel? That speech balloon is an odd shape, given the text that’s in it. Or did it just slip by and you’d scanned it before neatening up that bit?

No, when I draw the originals I hand write the text. Then when I get home I scan it and replace the lettering with my homemade font. Sadly, my handwritten stuff varies dramatically in size, apparently, so often you’ll see massive or bulbous balloons with very little text in it. Or sometimes a balloon that is half erased and half the image around it also gone to fit all the long words in.

    eleventhdr
I knew nine was out there somewhere guess he figured a way to diguise the tardis oncea gain hmmm knew he would!.
what’s this about drax is he in here somewhere as well.
The cybermen what’s with them anyway?
    Now what’s!?

Ummm… actually that’s not the 9th Doctor’s TARDIS. It’s Drax’. Look back through the story, Drax rescued the 9th Doctor from the Daleks. What’s with the cybermen? I don’t understand the question.

    carol:
Cooll! Wondered where Nine went! :)
    But where is Ten! :(

    On Gallifrey with the Valeyard.

    jet:
    Love love lovvvvveeeeeeeeeeeee this page…
    only one complaint…
    WHERES TEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please put ten in next slide.

I don’t do requests. I tell the story as it pans out. Sorry.

    Batmanofni:
Brillaint, 9 to the rescue, do you think he could be the first Doctor to comment on Peri’s twin assets. Just a thought.

Heh heh… no, that wouldn’t be appropriate. Companions, maybe, but the Doctor wouldn’t do that.

    Edrei:
I can’t wait to see Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart or the Delgado Master (possibly the Pratt/Beevers incarnation as well).

I’m afraid you’re not likely to see any of the Master’s other incarnations. It doesn’t fit the story.

    Turnip:
…Also, I believe that the gun-wielding Cyberman lost his gun’s shoulder strap in the second to last panel.
Wait, why would a Cyberman need a shoulder strap for his gun? I mean, it’s not like their arms can really get tired, being all…cybernetic and such.

    Ah. Good catch.

    Gold star for you.
Why would a Cyberman need a shoulder strap? I don’t know. But they’re in the show. *shrug*

    Neon:
And any chance we will see OTHER versions of the master….would love to see your take on Simm Master

Sorry. Not likely in this comic.

    Zack:
i also have another Question… Where is this in the Masters Timeline… Before or after the War (John simm incarnation or later version)

The Master in this story comes from after the Fox Film (”The Enemy Within”) and before the disguised Master from “Utopia”. He has been trapped inside the 8th Doctor’s TARDIS for some time, absorbing information and trying to collect himself within the heart of the TARDIS. When I wrote him into the comic, the new episodes with the Master in them hadn’t been broadcast yet, but thankfully do not contradict what I’ve done here. :D
(Though I don’t like the whole ’sound of drums’ thing that doesn’t fit with the Master’s previous continuity)

  121. Captain Shade

Any chance of you making a cameo? In either this, or the House of Phallous?

  122. Sean

Yeah, I like that idea! Like when Alfred Hiitchcock made movies and made cameos in them!

  123. Jonrob

Colin Baker was hampered by two things.
Bad scripting and a clowns uniform. That outfit did more to make the series look ridiculous and kiddish than any acting could.

  124. Rob

I may be unique… but I can’t stand 7 whereas I actually quite liked 6. Then again I rank 1 4 and 8 as my favourite, they oscillate. I also love 2 and 3. 5 9 and 10… I think that 10 suffers from a lot of bad writing. He has the potential to be a great doctor, but I just can’t get around how the new series has taken it…

I was at Orbital (Eastercon 2008) earlier this year and there was a panel entitled: Russell T. Davies, Saviour or Fanboy let loose. I know which side I fall on…

  125. Rich

Lord of Darkness & Sean: I dunno… I used to do that all the time. I had a strip in our highschool newsletter that went from being about a silly adventurer character to being about me trying to escape my own comic. The humour died when it became all ‘mary sue’.
As I got older I realized how dorky that was. I don’t have any plans for unnamed extras and I refuse to take a lead role in my own fancomic (except as writer/artist).
I suppose if all of you start clamouring for it I’ll consider it. But my instinct says ‘no’.

Jonrob: Yes. The outfit was largely ridiculous and certainly not likely to allow him to blend in to a crowd. In fact, I was often surprised at how little attention characters in the show paid to the stupid outfit. I mean, you’d get the odd comment here and there (”tall, blond hair, bad taste in clothes”) but for the most part, they’d shrug it off and take him as a serious scientist.
Can you imagine going into a lab and some guy is dressed like that?
“Hey, pal, I’m not going to take scientific advice from some doofus dressed like a clown.”

Rob: Fanboy let loose. For sure. But I don’t see that as a bad thing. I think the only way he could be the show’s saviour was for this to be the case. Any disconnected 3rd party would have cocked it up real bad and you’d have another “Star Trek” phenomenon where there’s only tenuous or distorted connections to the original material.
Ever read “The Nth Doctor”? It describes movies and shows that were nearly made after the series was cancelled. It includes things like:
The Doctor (played by such actors as Dudly Moore, Pierce Brosnan, John Cleese, bascially any performer you can think of with an English accent), and the Master are long lost brothers who create the Daleks together then go on to learn about love and laughter by having tea with Shakespeare yadda yadda.
The proposed Nelvana cartoon was about the Doctor being a blib in a computer matrix who travelled around from virtual world to virtual world.
See how much flack the Fox Film gets and its only problem is that they skimmed quickly over a Dalek reference, used the word “cloaking device” instead of “chameleon circuit” and made him half human. Otherwise, the two hearts, the regeneration (the presence of Sylvester McCoy!) the tools in the Doctor’s toolbox, the fantastic TARDIS interior design and Seal of Rassilon motif, the police box, the cameo of Tom Baker’s scarf, jelly babies, even the entire 8th Doctor ‘look’ were all very much in keeping with the original series.

  126. wulfae

There was a proposed Nelvana cartoon? When did this happen? I’m guessing during the haitus. It’d be cool to see a Doctor Who cartoon, might be a chance for Eight to have some interesting adventures. Though it couldn’t be flash animated.

  127. JustAWanderer

I’ve seen concept artwork from the Nelvana cartoon. (Which would have been some time in the 80s, actually.) It had very much a “Real Ghostbusters” look to it, if you remember that cartoon. Frankly, I wasn’t impressed.
This is the first that I’ve heard of any “blib in a computer matrix” idea. Now I’m really glad that never got made.

  128. Child of Zion

I really liked 4, not that I’ve seen even an entire season of him yet…but yea, so far my favorites are 4, 5, 9, and 10. Not in that order, I don’t think.

And yea, I agree that Russell T. Davies is somewhat of a fanboy let loose…but then I remember that he brought the Doctor back, and that makes him really high in my estimation (although the way he just dumped Christopher Eccleson off as quickly as possible? NOT cool. Watch him fall back down, and I mean DOWN, in my estimate.). So for me, he’s kinda both, and more savior than fanboy.

    For now.

  129. LadyVoldything

    NEEDS MOAR COMIC

This whole comic is absolutely fantastic, I was up till three in the morning reading it last night!

  130. CaSi

I was searching for Doctor Who fanwork at DeviantArt and got the link to this website by a coloured version of the first comic-page.
    This comic is really fanTAStic!
The drawings are great and the story is very funny and exciting.
I like the idea very much, that all the doctors meet…
Great comic, I’ll go on reading till the end, I think. :)
I hope it’ll go on soon,
    CaSi^^

  131. Turnip

You know, Rich has never really listened to character requests before, and I doubt he’ll start on page one hundred and eight. Frankly, when an author starts trying to appease the fans, the story is the one that suffers. There’s always going to be someone who wants this or that added or removed. That would just make Frankencomic, and it isn’t pretty. I’ve seen far too many stories that have gone that route. Somewhere along the line, everything that made those comics great was lost in the swarm of fan service.

I think we all agree that this is too good to suffer such a fate.

  132. Zack

I think that in the comic, the Roger Delgado Master should regenerate into the Peter Pratt Master by driving over a cliff in a Taxi, whilst eating a turkey. I also think that You should start making the comic more regularly. I think you should make 3 pages a day and start colouring them in as well.
I also think that you should bring in Aunt Lavinia’s ward, Brendan from K-9 & Company and make him turn out to be ‘the Other’ from the book Lungbarrow written by part time writer and full time Gas fire fitter Marc Platt.
And I want you to start doing this tonight at about 8pm, so it will be ready when I wake up in the morning.
    Thanks.

  133. Sean

“How can anyone put up a website and not update it continuously and in my favor for my personal amusement??”

“Yeah, some overworked chump voluntarily maintaining it in his spare time should be fired for this.”
    ;)

  134. Arianna_BadWolf

And this is why we ignore trolls Sean… we give them fodder, and they turn out to be even bigger morons than normal…

As for ‘the Other’ its 80/20 (ish) that he just might be the Doctor… it’s in the wiki canon area when you start reading into Rassilion and Omega, and the Time Lord Artifacts (Which sadly are not all explained, which would rock, but I suppose most of them are just made up to get a certain number bla bla bla)

Fantastic Rich. I’m waiting for more. Too bad I can’t use my computer at work otherwise I’d be glued to this screen waiting for the next one.

BTW… speaking of Artifacts… are you going to include any of them? Or have you already and I’ve just forgotten?

  135. Rich

Actually, to my knowledge, unless something new has come up in the last few episodes I haven’ t seen yet, there is no canon evidence to support the whole “Other” story. In fact, I find the whole thing rather annoying.

    *begin angry anti-”The Other” rant*
It’s all part of that *abandoned* plan of the McCoy era to turn the Doctor into something MORE than he was. And all we got in the series was the Doctor’s accidental tongue-slip about him being around for the creation of the prototype for the Hand of Omega and Lady Peinefort’s mysterious knowledge about something we never find out about. This shovelful of crap was scooped at the fans with all the ridiculous tripe about the loom and how Time Lords are weaved and not born.
Dispite tons of actual canon fodder we’ve been getting, and are continuing to get, that tells us quite plainly that the Doctor a)has(had) normal family, b)is obviously quite capable of reproducing, c)can’t go back into his own planet’s history and, for that matter, doesn’t remember any of it first hand, what he knows he learned in his studies, d) Is only somewhere between 900-1000 years old and therefore not from the Dark Time of Gallifrey’s past.
The Doctor continues to be mysterious enough as he is.
    *end rant.* :D

Sorry about that. But as the TV series ignores all that stuff, so does this comic. (And I had a rough day at work, needed an outlet. Thanks!)

As for the Artifacts of Rassilon, I don’t think I’ll be bothering to incorporate them unless they actually come into play in the story. :D

  136. John Paul

    Dear Rich

sorry about your rough day at work. I agree that the doctor is mysterious enough as he is, and thats part of the fun of it all. We don’t need to know his past, we can come up with that on our own!

    Cheers!

  137. Fangarius

Yes, the whole ‘The Doctor’s other than a Time Lord’ shtick to me was rather the Beeb’s attempt for extending the enigma about The Doctor. Seems it was the motus operandi of the writers was conjuring new unknown factor every time he regenerated into a new form, which made things more confusing than mysterious.

I also have the ‘Nth Doctor’ book as well. As for the Nelvana animated series, I never heard about The Doctor transversing about cyberspace. Instead many had gone under the impression (I think from Starlog, it was so long ago) Nelvana had proposed ‘reviving’ lost episodes from the series. In other words, the early episodes pre-Pertwee where many were accidentally destroyed by the BBC Film department. Sort of like what they recently did with ‘The Invasion’s’ missing episodes.

But sadly, guess the concept didn’t go over too well. Shame, because I would’ve loved seeing some of the missing Hartnell and Throughton episodes.

Anyway, as for The Doctor’s Past, I agree with John Paul, we really don’t need to know about that, because the fun behind our favorite Time Lord is the fact he’s a mysterious being. One who likes Jelly Babies and an occasional cheesecake now and again.

Of course when Doctor’s 5 through 10 aren’t being relentlessly perused by Dot Warner. Or so I’ve been told.

The Cardis is surely Drax’s. Doctor 9 might enjoy the immediate impact on the Cybermen but he has made his affection for the Police Box quite clear. My recollection of Drax ’s personality fits with the choice of car.

PS I’m getting very tired of Zack.

  141. Saph

No problem Alykon. Gave me an excuse to watch them again!

Yeah Children in Need is a telethon in the UK, on the BBC. So most BBC programmes do things for it. For example every year the news readers do a song & dance routine – be very glad you wont ever see it! It’s all in good fun & for a good cause though!

    Love Saph
    xxx

  142. oh....

50 strips since we’ve seen Nine…. (not including christmas)

  143. Child of Zion

I never heard of “the other” and the Doctor being “more than just another timelord”. It all sounds like tripe to me, though. When people who are very good at creating mystery try too hard, it effects the work, and most of the time ruins it (don’t overwork yourself, Rich! :-O :D ).

  144. Gecks

i dunno folks, maybe im blinded for the fact, doctor who has been a major part of my life, that i just never dislkied any of them….. i hear people say the stories written for six where terrible…perhaps my memory is vague, but i remember enjoing them, and it was nice that after peter davison, the doctor got some gusto, in a somewhat amusing manner, reminded me of the first doctor in some ways, that grumpy old timelord!….

  145. JustAWanderer

    Just a general FYI:
The Other dates back to the Virgin Publishing “Doctor Who: The New Adventures” novels from the early to mid 90s. (After the 1996 Fox movie, the BBC yanked Virgin’s contract and took the book production back in-house.)
The Other was an associate of Rassilon, whose name was lost to history. The ‘official’ history was that Rassilon banished him from Gallifrey. But in “Lungbarrow” (the last of the series, not counting the 8th-Doctor “The Dying Days”), it was revealed that the Other put himself into the Loom network* in order to be reborn centuries later — as the individual we’ve come to know as the Doctor.

*In those novels, Gallifreyans had lost the abililty to reproduce.

And for the record, I enjoyed (most of) the New Adventures novels. (Stay away from “The Pit” by Neil Penswick, incidentally.) After our local PBS station stopped showing the series in 1992, those books were my only real source for a Who fix.
I also don’t have a problem with the fact that the new series canon does not include them.

  146. Mreen

Sorry about your bad day at work *leaves a cookie*

But, as someone who has yet to read to Loom stories, I understand. They’ve shown us over and over that the Doctor can reproduce normanlly – each time they show us again, the Loom fans hate it – but I think we just have to accept them as a different universe than the TV Doctor. Which is fine.

More universes just means more directions the story can go in at once. All at once. :) Which is just how I think the Doctor would like it. :D

  147. Dr Nick R.

    hi everybody!
rich, how do u do the comics in wordpress? im stuck.
    Bi everybody

  148. Hilary

Dr Nick: E-mail me at dungeonmaster [at] yafgc.shipsinker.com and I’ll try to walk you through it. If you can be more specific in the email about what problems you’re having, that would be awesome.

  149. Turnip

The thing that I don’t get about Looms is…honestly, do the Time Lords act like the sort of folks who would tolerate messy, problematic, and embarrassing body parts if they didn’t serve a vital function? As in, reproduction? Obviously they do have genders, but if they were all bioengineered they wouldn’t NEED to have genders. And I’m sure some of the more prudish ones would love to have an asexual society. Just imagine how much neater it would be! None of that messy natural stuff. Granted, birth rates probably weren’t very high, but they wouldn’t need to be, what with the lifespan and all.

  150. Rich

Let us not also forget that there are two types of Gallifreyans. The ELITE, the TIme Lords, who have enormously extended lifespans and the ability to regenerate. Then there is the other, the standard Gallifreyan, presumably who failed some kind of test to gain entry into the Academy (the vortex test? Seems a bit extreme, but we haven’t seen any other in the series). They may or may not live longer than a human being (we don’t know for sure) and cannot regenerate. We know this because of many examples where non-Time Lord Gallifreyans are killed in standard ways that would be non-fatal to a Time Lord. (”The Deadly Assassin”, “The Invasion of Time”, “The Ark of Infinity”…)
Then there’s the childhood years. The time Romana spent as a *ahem* Time Tot. The Doctor remembering getting ghost stories from the crazy hermit on the hill and (if you accept anything from the Fox Film) watching meteor showers with his father.
I think the final icing on the cake is that flashback scene where we see an 8 year old Master who was taken from his parents. HIS PARENTS! to do the Vortext test.
Not loomed. Born. They’re people, not clones. I think the Sontarans would be offended by such a suggestion.

    Rich—-

I love this comic, dude…I only wish you would update more often (but you obviously have a REAL LIFE, unlike the rest of us).

My favorite Doctors are 4,3, and 10. Unfortunately, I don’t get a chance to see the show that often as I am cursed with REGULAR TV here in Tampa, and the PBS stations don’t have a clue about showing the good Dr here. And, I have very sporadic Internet access (another curse of not having $$$$ to pay out for good access so I piggyback on someone else’s) so watching online is totally out. Bummer.

Anyway, please please soldier on, my friend.

    a.

  153. Leeanne

I live in Australia so we allways get stuf late. espeshly Doctr Who

  154. Child of Zion

Just a support post, here…Go Rich! Your comic is awesome and feels like you are translating an actual Doctor Who film or episode into comic form, that’s how character consistant it is.

And to Who-ever (pun intended) is censoring for spoilers and removing them, be it Rich or a site monitor or whatever…
~Thank you, thank you, thank you! I haven’t even seen the episode after “Midnight” yet, due to some…technical difficulties. So it means a lot that I’m not Spoiled. Thanks again.

  155. Julia_Spindleshanks

Rich, I wish I had your surness. I don’t know whats going on anymore. AHHHHHHHH! I’ll just have to watch.

P.S. today was the last day of my second school term! YAY!!!!

  156. Gecks

yeah leeanne, it sucks we get doctor who much later then others, my episodes fell off the back of an internet server though *looks all innocent*

  157. hmc

The trouble with looking at Dr Who continuity, it that it has been added to piecemeal by lots of different creators at different times. For instance the fact the Doctor is a Time Lord is only revealed in the final 2nd Doctor story, the first third doctor story reveals that he has two hearts, the third Doctor’s regeneration is the first called by that name. This goes on throughout both series, a lot of it with stuff so “basic” to the character that it’s easy to believe it’s always been there. Unfortunately bits added, sometimes contradict previous stories, so the present creators and the fans just pick the bits that they want and ignore the bits that don’t work, hopefully the majority of fans will agree with them on what those bits are. :-)

The “other” stuff was an attempt to reintroduce some more mystery about the character as they felt the Doctor had too few secrets left. It was carried on into the Virgin books, which also introduced the Loom idea. A lot of this was jettisoned for the new series, rightly I think as too off putting for new viewers and old continuity has been just introduced with explanations as needed.

  158. JustAWanderer

The other thing (no pun intended) is that although the books, short stories, audios, etc. often refer back to the TV series, the TV series does not refer to those other things. And as Rich has pointed out, the series often flatly contradicts them.
It’s similar to what Douglas Adams did with Hitchhiker’s. The radio series, books, TV series, and the movie all contradict each other. The poor soul who is determined to create one consistent all-encompassing Hitchhiker’s continuity is probably going to drive himself insane in the process, or else master the art of doublethink.
And with that, might I suggest that we take the “Loom vs. natural birth” discussion to the forums?

  159. jet

oh Zack, Zack, Zack, zack, Zaaaaaccccccckkkkkkk….
    tut tut tut…
    sorry to interfire but…

  160. Hilary

Zack’s on a little timeout, gang, so there’s no point in replying to his comments right now. Don’t feed the energy creatures.

  161. jet

    sorry forgot to say…
    can we please have donna?
it would be so funney. and could she say the famouse line: “Am I bovverd?” :)

  162. Hilary

Jet: You keep making requests and keep getting shot down – I think perhaps we are not communicating clearly. :D

Please see questions 5 and 6 in the site FAQ.

JustAWanderer: That’s a fabulous idea. Please do!

  163. Mark

No new 10 Doctors or HOP for a week now.

    Are you on holiday? :-/

  164. Laura

Actually, it’s weird, but Rich’s comic is probably the reason Six is my favourite. He seemed so cool and kind of adorable here–like a crafty-yet-disgruntled sheep or something–that I wanted to check him out. But I couldn’t get ahold of any episodes, so I started off with his audio plays, which probably made all the difference, because those are remarkably well-written, Evelyn is one of the best companions ever, and Colin Baker is absolutely fantastic, making Six a very arrogant, blustery, but genuinely sweet individual.

Which made watching the Twin Dilemma for the first time much less painful than it probably was for most people. Y’know, knowing that the rampant insanity was just a phase to be passed through. And, well, a rather hot young Kevin McNally never hurt anything.

  165. Spartie

What are the chances of Maxil running into 6 (as I think its obvious Maxil is the keeper), or did The Monk kill Maxil?

also, what happened to 4? Did the explosion back in pg 84 send him back to trapped between time streams?

  166. JustAWanderer

Um … I thought the Valeyard was the Keeper.

  167. Child of Zion

An entire week with no new stuff…cannon or Rich…jeez, I’m having a Who withdrawl! :D

And…Jet? With Zack? Don’t make eye contact (just like my poor dog who was attacked by a bear this week…we think he will be Ok but he can’t really walk and has the saddest eyes, like he’s being punished for something he did…. ;( ) ! ;)

  168. Richie

    Hey Rich!

Season Finale night here! Just under two hours left before its on the telly! Mwa haaha! Can’t wait!

Hope you realize that after its aired, you’ll be providing the only Doctor Who thats worth watching (until the second series of Sarah Jane airs at least!!)!

    NO PRESSURE!! :-)

Love Nine in this… and wheres that Drax gotten off too?

Keep up the good work dude, this is awesome!!

  169. Darren

Well, it’s official; You ARE now are the only (current) source of new Doctor Who out there!

And better than a LOT of the 4th season!

    Adipose! (Pffh!)

  170. Zack's insane Dad

    I disagree
The 4th Season has been consistantly better than the last 3 previous seasons, mainly due to the performance of Catherine Tate, who is without doubt the best actress we have had in the role of companion since Louise Jameson in 1977.
It isnt just my opinion either. The facts are born out by higher viewing figures and AI scores. across the whole of this season. And as for the Adipose, after years we all know the RTD formula, he always starts the season light and fluffy.Plus the Adipose like the Krillatens in School Reunion are irrelevent, to the main plot which in both cases were about reintroducing the companion.
Oh and Rich – Great Comic Mate!

  171. Turnip

Erm, the viewing figures don’t prove that she’s the best actress. They just show how many people have watched this season. And of course more people have watched this season; just look at all the hype they’ve been generating! The flood of rumors swamping the internet, interviews that give vague answers which only fuel the flames, and the amount of foreshadowing pumped into the early episodes all served to drive people insane. And it’s worked, just like it always does. TV networks know how to play us viewers like a master pianist a baby grand! I mean, honestly! Look at the cliffhangers they’ve been throwing us!

Not that I don’t think Catherine Tate is a good actress. I do; Donna’s turned out to be a great character with her sort of…sibling relationship with the Doctor. They’ve really turned her into a very likable companion and I hope she stays a while. It’s just that there ISN’T a faultless way to rate an actor as ‘the best.’ No matter how great the ratings are, they aren’t made to judge individual actors. They simple show how popular the show on a whole is. There are still people who hate Donna’s guts. So, really, it IS just your opinion, Zack’s Insane Dad. …Erm, interesting title choice, there.

  172. Joe England

For my part, I’ve come to really like Donna… maybe more than any of the previous companions this series. She’s, I don’t know… down to Earth. Not all perfect or beautiful or brilliant (at least not so overtly) like Rose or Captain Jack or Martha or River Song, and not a soldier, either. But neither is she skittish or hesitant like Adam and Mickey were. And yet she’s just nice enough to avoid being obnoxious like Rose’s mother. All in all… yeah. I like her.

  173. Richie

Just thought you should know someone has uploaded a .cbr file of your comic on Demonoid as a torrent. All the pages are in the wrong order though! Hope they asked permission!!

  174. Hilary

Not as far as I know. Thanks for the alert.

  175. Richie

    No problems.

    Your friendly neighbourhood Welshie :D

  176. Child of Zion

All I have to say is…

    Shhh! I havn’t seen it yet! :D

  177. Arianna_BadWolf

Thanks Rich! I think the only thing that would play in anywhere is the Temple from the Five Doctors…
As for ‘The Other’ (when I mentioned it before) I have always been against that… it just never seemed right considering that if he had been from that ‘Dark’ time, he’d have not been able to regenerate….

but I’m going to quiet down now, since the topic has passed. Just been busy…..

  178. Darren

    @Arianna_BadWolf
I agree with you about ‘The Other’ business. Totally unnecessary. BTW in the Virgin New Adventures story ‘Lungbarrow’ it was said that The Other was from the Dark Times, but threw himself into the Loom machine, and out popped the Doctor from his genetic materiels, Susan was supposed to have recognised him from that. Despite in other novels where she isn’t related at all…

Also. if all Time Lords were supposed to spring out of the Loom FULLY GROWN, why was Susan a TEENAGER?

  179. hmc

    Darren,

From what I remember of Lungbarrow, Susan is the Other’s actual physical grandaughter and one of the last children born on Galifrey. So somehow when the !st Doctor goes back in time and meets her she recognises him and he her but they are not sure how.

Another problem with The Loom, it is a straight rip off from Arthur C Clarke’s nove The City and the stars, where the human race lives in lone city and the population goes through cycles of either being stored in a computer databank or being woven into existence. I think it was just a desperate attempt to make TImelords nonsexual for some reason

  180. Arianna_BadWolf

HMC isn’t that the basis for that one movie…ummm… Aeon Flux? Is the movie/series based off Mr. Clarke’s books… hmmm

    anyway…yeah…

  181. coolreb

    UPDATE SOON I LOVE THIS!

  182. Cate

Thanks for doing that Rich……and you’re doing a wonderful job and also for deleting the Spoilers as in Australia we’ve just finished “Partners in Crime” and although I know there have been lots of people over here who’ve downloaded and already seen the episodes…..I love watching The Doctor on telly.

You’ve done Chris’ Doctor brillantly and I thank you for that….love the way he leans on the car …..Chris gave the Doctor attitude and while reading the strip, I had his voice in my head….

    Thank you once again :-)
(Peri, on the other hand… yergh)

  183. hmc

    Arianna,

I don’t think so, in the City and the Stars, the city is very peaceful if stagnant, on the whole with no outside known about , with very few troublemakers and even they are part of the over all plan of the place. It’s a really cool book. Aeon Flux seems much more violent than that, and though I haven’t seen it, it’s description on Wiki makes me think that it’s not at all related.

  184. Child of Zion

Just saw “Turn Left” and “The Stolen Earth”. And to prevent spoilerage…all I’m gonna say is that it isn’t fair.

  185. Child of Zion

And, Rich? More Ten, please. I think I’m gonna need it… ;(

  186. brad

whens is the next one comin out, i dont mean to rush u or eneythin i just wont to know

  187. Arianna_BadWolf

HMC: Yeah… but the way you describe the books… it sounds very much like it, a few rebels, DNA being stored, no going to the ‘outside’ ETC… but I’ll agree its violent. But it was a pretty cool movie. I’ll have to read them books!

And if anyone can point me in the direction of a place to watch Doctor Who? My planet Gallifrey (and youtube for that matter) won’t play past two seconds or anything! If anyone can suggest a remedy to this problem (be it with the site or my computer) please tell me. I can’t watch Who on tv on fridays or saturdays since I have work at those times. (or if one of you lovelies has this latest season recorded… you could send me a copy? I beg… plead… whimper… etc)

  188. A.leon

    Arianna,try Surfthechannle or Rootforum1.

  189. joe england

Well, Arianna… mayyybe I shouldn’t do this, but… I can’t resist answering a question I know the answer to. If this breaks rules I fully expect this comment to be deleted, but all I’ll say is that if you put the syllables briv, in, and ex together, in that order, and search for that on Youtube, you will find a channel which may have what you’re looking for.

  190. Sarah

Yay! Nine is back! I was wondering what he was up to.

You know that car doesn’t actually help him with the claims that he’s in a midlife crisis, lol.

  191. Kitty~10fan

Ahh, i can hear Nine saying these lines! Brilliant work, Rich.

  192. Jet

Hilary: oh sorry I keep fogetting to refresh ut thanks for telling me…
