I work for an animation company (boring legal but unlayoffable department) and we were enouraged to pitch ideas
I had an idea for an SF show that did not involve cute kids or mecha – but several of our sales execs expressed strong doubt about the viability of a serious SF cartoon
The shows they ended up running with (and eventually dropping before production began) were of the ‘alliterative name + object’ variety (Tom the tractor, Gary the garbage truck, Sally the Septic Tank, Yancy the Yugo) and licensing rights to anime that died 5-6 years ago in Japan
i think reality rabbit need a girlfriend, you need to hook him up with fwuffy kitten.
i love that the animations are extracted through torture.
you must hurt man if you have been doing a comic a day lately
And the animation industry isnt the only “world” in which this is true. I tried to sell a series of new read along books – 48 pages, atleast an hour runtime – with good stories based on my own characters and one or two knowns – Zorro, Sherlock Holmes. But the supermarket buyers would rather buy the same Disney shit they’ve been selling for the last 40 years, movie tie-ins that have a 6 minute runtime (*cough cough* Shrek *cough*)..
The consumers really dont have a choice, it’s kind of fucked up. The only way to be a real success today is to do it yourself online, get the funding and produce the product and distribute it yourself – we can all do it today, the distribution channel is open to us.. but ofcourse not everyone, including myself, can just up and produce an animated series or print a series of books. Still slaves to the rich and stupid. =)
I love reality rabbit *huggles*
